Chips: 133 | | | Do you play differently in a tourney versus a cash game? I've been playing relatively well in tourneys and it has been doing wonders for my confidence...............
however i decided to try out the .5/1.00 cash games on pokerstars and i literally had my ass handed to me
lost two hundred bucks, of which the bulk of the money was essentially lost on two hands
first hand was when i was dealt KK and did a 4 times BB preflop raise and the guy who limped in ahead of me re-raises me, so i re-raised, and then he went all in. And guess what, he had AA. I couldn't believe he limped in originally with AA. anyway, the board didn't help either of us so of course he won.
second hand i had AT and had a set of ten's on the turn and i put the guy all in and i forget the exact specifics but basically he was on a straight draw and the river gave him a K and completed his straight
i totally got sucked out on..............
anyways, do you guys approach cash games differently then tourneys? if so, how? what differences between your approach to both? |

It could be worse, I lost a similar hand, same stakes $100 in one hand but the other person had Kings and flopped a set.

When you maybe fish for something in a cash game and catch, thats when you can get paid big time. In a tournament I have to be a bit more "rockish" as if I get my hand caught in the cookie jar to many times, well, my tourney is over. Cash games can be crazy like that though, I played two hands at the casino the other night and lost $200. |

in the cash game i was in i noticed that there was always a couple of "reckless" players who were obviously there to gamble. They would come in with a 100 bucks, go down to 50 in a matter of minutes, then up to 200 in a matter of minutes, and bust out just as quick. then they would pop back up with another reload of cash. Just reckless.
for me, the money wasn't such a big deal, i guess what bothered me more was that i was getting outdrawn and i think psychologically, i knew it was actual money getting sucked out whereas in a tourney you put in the buy-in and that's it. also in the cash game, since the blinds don't move, every hand there seemed to be quite a few people willing to pay the 3-4 times BB (would be about 3-4 bucks) to see the flop so i was always coming up against people hitting those "miracle" cards on the flop with their crappy hole cards. in a tourney, people seem to be "tighter" as to calling preflop raises, especially more so as the blinds go up so with a nice premium hand and a nice preflop raise you could limit the players going into the flop to one or two other players. also, i've heard that online, you can use programs like poker tracker to track not only your stats but your opponents actions/stats and superimpose those stats on the screen via some heads up display so knowing that, it seems as if the people who play all of those hours online will have a distinct advantage that they would not have in a real casino cause they simply wouldn't be able to track all the players they come across.
i'm heading to AC on Monday to play in a few tourneys, but after the beat down i received online, i'm a bit hesitant to play in a cash game in AC. It's amazing how a few hands that go against you can shake your confidence so much. |

That being said, don't let one poor sessions (as in losing some $$$) deflate what you know of the game. It's in my opinion that you may need more cash game experience before jumping into the fire. I could be wrong but in my case, I'm still "a learnin" but at smaller stakes. .1/.25 now and I played .25/.5 last night. Lost a couple of buy in's in the .1/.25 ($30) won it back and a little more in the .25/.5. Played a little better in the higher of the 2 stakes but I still need work.
Either way, good luck and I was just playing with the little fish .

Chips: 636 | | | Re: Do you play differently in a tourney versus a cash game? I play different, too. In cash games i play a wider range of Hands, more connectors or pocket-pairs in the hope to flop a set/straight/flush. In tournaments I wouldnt do that until i am a real bigstack. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
