Re: Your top tips for winning poker?

I think most common fault is playing too many hands. Therefore tighten up starting requirements unless you are great player post flop which for most players is not the case.

Re: Your top tips for winning poker?

Find easy targets who are basically giving their money away. Game selection is probably the most important thing to focus on, even for the inexperienced players.

This is basically what the pro's do. Notice how they always preach game selection. This is what Barry Greenstein would likely tell you. You want the largest gap you can find, at a meaningful limit of play, between you and your opponents (in a home game, casino, or online). Leave the finesse to the poker purists.

A total novice can be quite profitable at a loose, aggressive table of bad players by playing very tight. This applies to limit, and at NL he/she has the same advantabe buying in with a short-medium stack.

Re: Your top tips for winning poker?

As far as playing no limit tournaments goes, I'd say read Harrington on Hold'em.

Re: Your top tips for winning poker?

don't race with bad players. You will have chances to get your money in when you're ahead. be careful of good players who check raise you. Also stay out of pots with Jose Rios.

Don't create huge pots with only TPTK.

Re: Your top tips for winning poker?

Edit - duh - just reread the OP vs the thread title and realize that you only want one tip - not tips.

Single tip - remember you're not playing in a vacuum, take other players and their likely holdings into consideration.

Original lengthy post:

I echo the don't play too many pots/hand selection/patience sentiment. Also be careful of playing too many questionable starting hands out of position.

I would also say that the tendency to just concentrate on your cards and the board without giving consideration to what your opponent might be holding can get you in real trouble. If you don't have the nuts (and you should always be aware of what the nuts are) give some thought to what others might have based on how they're playing their hands. Also realize that the nuts often change.

I also think that playing too tentatively and playing super aggressively can both be equally dangerous if you don't know what you're doing and aren't a superb post-flop player. Be aware of the texture and compositon of the flop too and how it relates to not only your starting hand, but what logical starting hands your opponents might be playing.

Finally, getting cute and slow playing would be winners when there is danger on the board can be catastrophic as well.

Re: Your top tips for winning poker?

Use patience and well-timed aggression to build a tough table image.

Best I can do in a one-liner.

Re: Your top tips for winning poker?

Don't play above your bankroll. You will likely run into better players. People playing with scared money stick out like sore thumbs and are easily exploitable.

Re: Your top tips for winning poker?

Watch players.

Be patient.

Strike hard.

And in a slightly longer explanation from Doyles book, "The trick to no limit is to put a man to a decision for all his chips." (And I will add to this, "And not all of your chips unless you are sure you have the better hand.")
