I've recently been trying out the Texas Holdem NL evening tournaments at Hollywood Park Casino. I've done the $60 + registration plus one add-on or rebuy before the break tournaments and I've got a good feel for this type of game and managed to last till 14th place (out of 70-80). Nothing too fancy, survive with some solid hands, avoid early all-ins, build a tight image (at least for me), steal some pots, let others knock each other out etc.
BUT I decided to try the $20 + registration plus unlimited rebuys before the break Thu tournament. There were probably around 80-90 people and it was like a mad-house with multi-player all-ins, calling/limping/raising with every junk hand possible and over 30 rebuys at one table alone (mine was around 15 before break), and huge stacks for some plays and little bitty stacks for others. It was kinda crazy. I didn't last very long and I gave up after 2 rebuys (I busted out with all-ins trying to catch the chip leader).
My question is what is the general strategy for this low-stakes unlimited rebuy tournament?
Super-aggressive play? and just keep on rebuying? Rebuying 3 or 4x doesn't make sense to me.
My only advice is you have to gamble, and expect to rebuy one or more times. If you can gamble and win a few pots early, then you can afford to slow down a bit. But if you wait too long and get blinded off, then there are going to be too many big stacks willing to call just because of your relative stack size. You still should try to play good poker, but in rebuy tournaments I do not hesitate with hands like AK or QQ. I want to get in there and gamble and try to build my stack to help combat some of the craziness.
