Countdown to Vegas

Im going to Vegas Aug 6th-10th- yes i know a week before the SCS :/. Anywany, the first and only casino I have been at has been Argosy in Lawrenceburg, IN (HQ & Bw's stomping ground). The wait was too long at the lowest NLHE tables that I couldnt wait, so i played some $5 black jack. My question is. I;ve never played poker at a "real" casino. What steps should I take when going to vegas? I play poker for fun, so I will only be playing $1/$2 NLHE. What should I do to not feel over whelmed / intimidated by the atmosphere i will be in? Im sure I will be nervous because it will be my first actualy "live" play at a casino. Any help much appreciated.

Thumbs up Re: Countdown to Vegas

First of all, have a good time and remember that is why you are there. If you have questions ask. Vegas is such a huge attraction there are first time players everywhere. I would say that you should get a comp card and ask dealers or the pit boss anything you need help with. They are very courteous and always willing to help so don't feel strange about asking for help. In my past I was somewhat hesitant to ask for assistance then I realized that this type of thinking was only keeping me from enjoying myself more. Now I just go for it. At any point the dealers will help with any questions. I hope you have a great time and GOOD LUCK.

Re: Countdown to Vegas

Did someone say Argosy? You have a couple weeks before your trip, so I'm going to first suggest that you head on out about 20 minutes or so past the Argosy to Grand Victoria in Rising Sun. If you do, go on a Friday or Saturday. We've gone there the last 2 weekends (first on a Friday, and then last Saturday) and they have been spreading a $1/3 NL game lately. The reason I say this is that I know that the wait at Argosy can sometimes be as long as 2 hours (or more) on the weekends, and we had a much shorter wait at Grand Vic, which was probably only a 1/2 hour or so last Saturday. Even if you just go one time, I think you'll get a feel for casino cash games and that will make you feel like an old pro once you get to Vegas.

If you can't play locally first, don't panic. It's not a requirement! I can remember my first cash game experience. I was pretty scared. Harlequin took me to Tropicana to play because they had a low buy-in for their $1/2 NL game (or was it $1/3... can't remember for sure). It's a small card room that doesn't get very crowded. The staff is friendly and helpful and it's a great place to get your feet wet in live poker. It actually became one of my favorite places to play. It seems they have an endless supply of fish there.

Otherwise, you may try out one of the other smaller card rooms first, like Flamingo or maybe Harrah's. They aren't as intimidating as someplace like Bellagio. Once you play a session or two, I'm sure you'll feel comfortable enough to head over to Venetian or Caesars – both of which have awesome rooms and it would be a shame for you to miss either. A shame, I tell you! Both of those places have friendly, helpful staffs as well. You really can't go wrong out there. Everyone that I've encountered is patient and friendly. And remember, it's the dealer's job to keep the game running smoothly and efficiently, so they will be more than happy to help you if you have questions with anything.

Have a great time! We'll miss you at the SCS. Maybe you'll be a big winner and be able to extend your trip a couple more days.

Re: Countdown to Vegas

I played poker in a B&M casino for the first time over memorial day weekend. a couple things/suggestions from my experience:
1. Try playing in a low buy in tourney first. It is a great way to get a feel for how the game runs in a live casino environment
2. Be prepared for some ultra agressive play. I was there over Memorial day weekend so the local sharks may have been out a bit more, but from what I understand in general they come out to the strip casinos over the weekend to feed on toruists. I started out playing a really TAG style which worked well both to win some pots and set my table image. It wasn't until later that I loosened up.

If you are looking for a decent low buy in tourney try the hotel formerly know as Treasure Island - now TI (a little prince humor for anyone who didn't get the joke). They run a $60 buy in tourney at 2,7,10 am & 2,7, & 11 PM. There are unlimited alternates through the first break. There is also an optional (really mandatory since everyone does it) $5 add on for 1k more chips at the first break. It is a fun toruney - I played in it 5 times over 3 days. (Never di write that trip report )

I hope that helps a little- I was in the same situation and it can definitely be nerve wracking. Don't let it be - just enjoy yourself
J

Re: Countdown to Vegas

1/2 in vegas is very easy to beat, especially during the weekend

i would just go to venetian, mgm grand and perhaps ceasars (bellagio doesnt have 1/2)

during the weekend pretty much all the cardrooms are littered with donks ready to gamboool

Re: Countdown to Vegas

Sorry for the slight threadjack........

Does the Mirage spread a $1/$2 game or is $3/$6 the lowest? I stopped over there for about 5-8 minutes on my way through last trip and didn't see any $1/$2. I am staying there for a bachelor party in Sept. and would love to play some $1/$2 if it is available
Thanks

Re: Countdown to Vegas

AS far as the actual mechanics of what to do to join a cash game:
Watch the board and find the game you want to play in (assume 1/2 NL)
Go to the desk and say "1/2 no limit, CW" (tells them the game you want to play, and your "moniker")
When you get called, the person at the desk will point you to where to sit.
Ask if you should buy chips at the table or the cage.
Buy your chips.
Sit at assigned seat, take a deep breath and let a few circuits go buy while you watch the table getting comfy and a feel.
ENJOY
