Being from New Zealand where the tipping culture is non-existent I was wondering what the rules are in the USA regarding tipping the dealers at casino card tables? The difference between higher limit games vs. lower limit games in terms of amounts, how much has to be in the pot to warrant a tip etc.

There are no rules, only etiquette. I think usually the tip on an average pot is 1 or 2 of the lowest denom chips.
That sounds like beeing a dealer is a nice job with also a good payoff.
You'd think. But the cost of living in Vegas is pretty high. Plus most of them make around minimum wage.
I know at Foxwoods, the dealer's pool their tips and they're divided and paid out in their checks, which is stupid. The whole point of tipping is to reward good service. That's why it's a tip.
If I am playing 3-6 or 4-8 limit the dealers are usually friends that I will tip about 5%. If I am playing NL I tip 1 or 2%. I always tip a little higher if I suck out on someone or when I get on a heater.

Thats exactly the same opinion i have on that method.
So if you are a dealer you recieve only a little fix amount of money and have to hope for good tips. And if you work at the wrong casino you have to split that withyour colleagues that are perhaps not friendly at all?
Through my pink sunglasses it looked like beeing a dealer is like shuffling cards and watching nice poker while getting paid off well for that.
There had to be a hook
