Jacks in first position

I have about $20 left in P* that I couldn't pawn off on some of my local friends, so I played a $6.50 single table SNG.

What is the correct raise in this situation?

PokerStars Game #9648696105: Tournament #48971155, $6.00+$0.50 Hold'em No Limit - Level III (25/50) - 2007/04/28 - 11:36:31 (ET)
Table '48971155 1' 9-max Seat #1 is the button
Seat 1: rottieusa (1570 in chips)
Seat 2: BrettButter (1630 in chips)
Seat 3: DL1000 (720 in chips)
Seat 4: Belgarion198 (1500 in chips)
Seat 5: boytommy (1430 in chips)
Seat 6: johnnychan66 (2245 in chips)
Seat 7: cha59 (1515 in chips)
Seat 8: fujjji (1525 in chips)
Seat 9: dckelvin247 (1365 in chips)
BrettButter: posts small blind 25
DL1000: posts big blind 50
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to BrettButter [Jc Jh]
Belgarion198: folds
boytommy: calls 50
johnnychan66: folds
cha59: folds
fujjji: folds
dckelvin247: folds
rottieusa: folds

Action on me, in the small blind, one limper, 125 total in the pot so far. Should I make a big raise to try and take down the pot since I will be out of position, or a smaller raise to invite a call from one of the blinds? I have a pretty tight image (if people are keeping track of my play) and haven't been played back at yet.

Re: Jacks in first position

Juice it 2K if you have to see a flop you aren't too bad off. Rep any high card, and get away once it looks ugly.

Re: Jacks in first position

I would make it about 425 to go and hope to take it down there, I hate JJ especially in first position

Umm... I just rechecked the blinds here. I would pop it 300 and see what develops.

2K is a little much.

I agree.. JJ in first position can be a dangerous hand... I hate it too. I want as few callers as possible with JJ here. I dont know if thats the "right" move, but i just dont like jacks in first position.

I'd bump ~3X the pot and see what happens.. so anywhere between 300-500 should be enough to push weak hands out.. that puts your stack between 1300-1100 post bet.

You've got more chips than the other two... thats good!
DL1000 - 720
boytommy - 1430

If DL1000 is going to call between 300-500 he's probably going all-in (if not pre-flop, probably post flop). which is what i would expect if he makes a pre-flop call of that size.

boytommy may just toss away his BB after being raised 5-9x the BB.

That said, if the flop contains AKQ you could very well be in trouble.

Re: Jacks in first position

I make it T325 preflop. If called and a non ace board comes lead for the pot on the flop .

Re: Jacks in first position

It wasn't a results-oriented post, but I'll still say what happened.

I raised to T300. Everyone folded.

I'm still curious to see what some other people suggest though! Thanks for the input thus far.

Re: Jacks in first position

Looks ok. You don't want to raise too little even if you have aces because you're out of position and you're giving him better odds to call.

Re: Jacks in first position

Johnny come lately.

I agree with how you played the hand, I would have raised it to either 250 - 300 depending on how the table was playing. I would be happy to just take down the pot after that raise.

*side note* I've been playing the Turbo $6 + .50 just recently after it was suggested in another thread. Quick games and the play isn't that bad. While playing I've noticed ppl that have played in the $30 & $50 SNG's playing these. They must be slumming or building up their bankroll.

Re: Jacks in first position

I'm probably raising the pot here (225). No one is short-stacked, so I'm not trying to get involved in a hand that may end up all-in on the flop. This raise will limit the field and give you a good idea of where you're at. If you get called, oh well. You didn't risk that much. Hope for a nice flop.
