In a pot-limit game, the quickest way to calculate the maximum bet you can make is: 3x the last bet (or action) plus what's behind it, NOT including any of your current bet.
For example: SB = 5, BB = 10, max bet = 3 x 10 + 5 = 35
In this situation, if you bet 35, the next bettor can make it 3 x 35 + 10 + 5 = 120.
If you're the first to act in any given betting round, then obviously there is no action yet so your maximum bet is 3 x 0 + (amount in pot) = amount in pot.
Try it -- it works really well. The mathematics are pretty simple -- here's the explanation:
Let x = the last bet, and y = everthing behind it not including your bet. When you call the bet, you increase your current bet to CALL the amount x, so there is now x + x + y = 2x + y in the pot. Your maximum RAISE (after calling) is thus 2x + y, which, when added to your call of x, totals 3x + y (i.e., three times the last bet plus what's behind it). Make sense?
