Chips: 4,623 | | | Lets play a hand together. Setting:
My buddy's super juicy $1/3 game with the Dr.s and lawyers. Very nice game, fun and lots of money flying around. 5- 10K in play at any time. Sometimes we mix is up with PLO. I just re-bought for $200 after the small blind stacked me when he got in real bad with pocket 9s and cracked my AA.
We are playing
We try limping in middle position and the button raises to $16. One person calls between and we call. ( The small blind is raising every other hand to $16 and is very aggressive pre-flop. Not a terrible player, knows lots of numbers and has read a couple of books. ) I've got a good read on him 80% of the time.
Small blind is rushing around $1600 in his stack
2 others $400 - 500
Me $200 just re-bought
The other two are pretty easy to figure out.
We pick up another caller.
4 players see the flop.
One check to us (looks very weak). It's our auction.

Top pair, ok kicker - not bad!
Middle position, no real draws - not good.
Pot sized bet. Assume that the raiser flat calls and the others fold.
You of course will lead out no matter what the turn card is. If he raises you on the turn you can consider a surrender. Likely call and then check/fold at that point if no jack comes.
If the flush comes on the turn is he tricky enough to smooth call if that's his bingo? If the turn blanks and he smooth calls, I'm not too worried. Put him on a fd at this point or a weak king.
If the river blanks, too, I'm probably betting again. If he's tricky enough to call me on the turn and then raise me on the river after blank/blank on that board I'm probably surrendering. If he beat me with a weaker king, well played. |

If this guy is a habitual cont. bet bluffer I might check/call. If he raises all the time preflop with any two cards then I like a bet of about 2/3s of the pot to protect us against various draws. Obviously if either players goes nuts you probably let this hand go unless you are very shortstacked. |

As played, I'm probably checking. This hand is just asking for trouble. |

If I check and the agro player them continues his pre-flop bet (which I expect him to do) I gain no info. A bet of about $35 to $50 seems right to me to help me find out where I am in the hand. Unless a ½ to 2/3 of the pot sized bet is considered weak with these players. If you have a tight-aggressive table image then the others should know about where they stand against you too. But based on the info you have given I am betting it out here. (I purposefully posted this without reading any other comments to see if I am headed in the right direction.)

Reconvene and respond. Sorry for the mix-up. Quite the difference.

Almost all of the time I am putting a bet of 2/3 to 3/4 the size of the pot right there. We probably want this hand to be over on the flop, and if we get a lot of action or a caller then we need to be very careful of falls on the turn. A lot of cards are scare cards on the turn so it would be time to slow down. |
