Chips: 567 | | | Discussing Strategy with your poker player pals. The other day I was watching a repeat of HSP season 1 ( I think). In this episode Erik Lindgren hit quads on the turn against Daniel Negreanu. Daniel had the nut straight on the flop and allowed Erik to make quads on the turn. Daniel couldn't get a read on Erik and paid him off. During the Episode Erik discussed how he and Daniel discuss strategy. The result was that Eric mixed up his play to throw of Daniel.
Frankly I would never want to discuss my strategy with people I play poker with. I wouldn't want to reveil any inside information on how I play. There's enough leaks in my game as it is. If I were to discuss strategy with players I would definitly speak in general terms with out trying to give away to much information.
How do you discuss poker strategy with people you play with? Do you feel your discussions have come back and bit you in the arse? Have you benefited from your pals overshare? |

They like to play recreationaly, but none of them ever read or study the game outside of our weekly play. I am a total junkie so I read and think about the game all the time, but I am the only one. I wish the effort made me a shark amongst the fishes, but a few of the guys I play with are very good. They would doubtlessly be great with some dedicated effort, but they are still very good none the less.

Can't really see no wrong in it.
Educating some of the players around the table makes them easier to play as well so I guess you can talk strategy pretty loose if you like. What I never talk about is my reads on other players tells or how I feel about the game in particulary. |

After they are gone of course. |

Only with certain players though.
My boss (who I regularly play with) and I discuss strategy because we have both read a few books, and watched a lot of poker. We know the lingo and common strategies and use dicussion to improve our play.
Another regular player and I practice heads up all the time for no (or very little money - we are keeping a tally though). We discuss each other's play a lot. We even tell tells. It is just a deal with have going to improve each other's game.
Other than that I will occasionally discuss strategy or tell people in my home game when they have made a big blunder, like bluffing all in with a bunch of other players in a hand, or who have a major tell. The reason is I want my home game to be a challenge and be competitive. |

I don't always go into the exact detail of my particular play, if it was a hand I was in, (trying to keep it at a little higher level) but rather go into the general strategy on the play or the hand and more about the other players in the hand and how my play influenced whatever the outcome was, or how a different bet, posture, etc. would have defined a different outcome in the hand.
All three of us are pretty open with one another in our discussions, and also understand that we are at times seated at the same table, so there is a give and take in such situations.
I guess in this case, this is where mixing up your game would come into play. Your buddy, whom you have discussed this scenario with, is expecting you to make _____ move, and you change up your play to throw him off, should he be in the hand. |

I discuss a lot with my son and some of his advice were well over my head. On some of his advice, it took about a year before all of a such the light bulb flash on.... It took a lot of playing before understanding certain ideas. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
