| Discussion: Tournament w/rebuy - My strategy Monthly NLHE tournament, I am the host and TD so I change the format a bit and add unlimited rebuys up to first break and one addon at the break.
Going into the tournament I knew my strategy early on was to be super aggressive. This is completely opposite of my normal style of play. My reasoning was I had the rebuys to fall back on and I knew changing my style would really confuse those who know my tight aggressive play. Game plan was to play super aggressive and if I took down the pots fine, but if I got caught on a stone cold bluff I knew this would bring action later on when I did catch a good hand or a good flop.
Sure enough I got caught on a stone cold bluff and had to show down a 7 8 off from late position when I flopped an open ender and didn't catch. Did a rebuy and it happened...
Blinds 50/100
Me - SB Dealt 4 5 D
Raise three times the BB from UTG, folded all the way around, I call and BB calls
Pot 1200
Flop comes K J 7 all diamonds
Knowing I will get action I bet 900 on my flush giving better than 2:1 pot odds
BB calls
UTG Raises All-In and has me and the BB covered
I make the call and so does the BB
UTG flips K Q o for top pair
BB flips Q 10 for open ended straight draw
Turn and River are rags and I triple up on 4700, now sitting with 14,100 in chips. Time to sit back and play my normal style.
I ended up taking down 2nd place with a starting field of 26 players. This was my first tournament with a rebuy and I am curious if my strategy holds any water or if I played like a donk and simply got lucky. The thing that makes think I played a solid strategy was that days prior to the tournament I had shared my strategy with a few of my close poker friends and it played out almost to the tee.
Just as a side note the super aggresive style was fun, but I don't think I could ever truely adopt that style of play, I will leave that to the Gus Hansens out there!!!
