Chips: 507 | | Telling what you're holding to prevent gambling? High Stakes Poker 10/16/2006 Spoiler...
So, I was getting so sick of my aces getting busted, that on Monday, I raised 3.5 times the BB preflop with my pocket aces and got one reraiser for 15 times the BB. I pushed all in (only about 3 times what he just reraised with) and told him, "Just so you know if you want to gamble, I have A,A".
I didn't want to gamble and was happy with winning the pot so far. He folded, and I showed the aces.
Now, maybe I'm a donkey, but...
On the last episode of "High Stakes Poker", everyone had decided they were going to play three more hands, so everyone was playing super tight, not wanting to lose any money that they wouldn't have a chance to win back that session. However, on the very last hand, Barry Greenstein got pocket aces and raised. Sam Farha got pocket kings and reraised. Barry went all in, and Sam quickly called. A king came on the flop, and Barry lost $180K. He had been up about $40K (I think) prior. I watched this about an hour after I had just played my hand above. I thought, "Barry, you should have did what I did."
Of course the odds are supposed to make it so Barry wins more often than he loses in that situation, so he just needs to get into that situation a few more times to even out, but maybe Barry has the same "luck" that I have.
What do you all think of this strategy? Are you thinking, "Where can I play at plagueboy's table, so that I can take his money?" |

As to the strategy, what do you do when you tell someone this and they go all-in?
Also, 3.5 raise doesn't strike me as very large which is what I think you were trying to indicate. |

Also, 3.5 raise doesn't strike me as very large which is what I think you were trying to indicate. | I would only do this if I had pocket aces or pocket kings preflop when I get a reraise. If I had aces, and they called my all-in, I'd be gambling but I'd have the advantage. If I had kings, and they had aces, theyr'e going to call me even if they didn't know what I had.
The only rule that I know of is if you show one, you have to show everyone.
The 3.5 the BB is because I did want some money/action for my aces. |

If you fold, you shut your mouth...
I think I might try your strategy tonight. I'm sick of going all-in pre-flop with by far the best hand and losing it on a lucky river that's a 1-3 outs in the deck situation (and yes, even when I go in pre-flop, it's always the river card that kills me, even though it could've been any of them).
Last Sunday, the hand that killed me was QQ. Well, I had QQ, and pushed all-in from middle table short-stacked with maybe 1/20 of the table's chips. My only caller had K9o. He never hit a K but got 4 clubs to give him a flush with his 9. I had no peasant queen, unfortunately. |

Let me know if you try this and how it works out.
One tip that I forgot to mention, I let the player know what I have right before I push all my chips in. Otherwise, you might get an instant call before you can tell them. |

Maybe we get even better and he flips AK. I understand getting gunshy, but you have to play your big advantages to the max. Presumably, your opponents aren't going to be doing the same for you - therefore in the long run, you are going to be playing losing poker (or close to it). |

I agree with above, if I have A's and it is HU, I want a call!!!!! If you are not willing to gamble when you have the best hand, what kind of card would you want to hold before you take a chance, might as well not play!!!!
