Tourney advice appreciated

Hey all, here's my scenario... I consider myself a respectable poker player in my local home and casino games. Historically I make more money than I lose playing a $1-$3 no limit game at the local casino and a variety of home cash games and tourneys. Recently I played very well in an online tournament and won first place, a $12,000 prize package to play in the Aussie Millions. Talk about a small fish in a big pond. Obviously, this is a complete different type of format than any I have ever played before. If anyone who has had some success in large tournaments and would like to share their strategies or tips with me, I would greatly appreciate it. I know there are several books on tourney poker out there, if anyone has read one and can recommend it. Thanks in advance to anyone who has input.

Re: Tourney advice appreciated

First things first... congrats on the big win!

I know there are a few people on here that have played in tournaments similar to what you'll be playing in, so you should get some great advice on how to handle the tourney.

My advice would be to just enjoy the free trip and the experience -- I'll bet the vast majority of people here would love to trade places with you!

Congrats! That is a big win and I am so jealous! Make sure you really enjoy the experience, bring a camera and take lots of pictures to document your journey too.

Harrington on Holdem, volumes 1 and 2 are a terrific start for tournament play if you have not checked them out already.

Re: Tourney advice appreciated

I played in the 1k WSOP prelim event and here's some advice.

1) Don't look at your cards until it is your turn to act.

2) Do the same routine every time. MikeJ from PSO gave me great advice which is pull up one card for 3 seconds and memorize it, then the other card for 3 seconds and memorize it. This will allow you to not give anything away by taking the same amount of time to process the hand and hopefully not react differently whether the hand is AA or 72.

3) Before you fold to someone's bet, look at your cards one more time before you toss them in. Just a precaution, especially early if you're nervous or late when you're tired.

4) always have your hands on your cards or a chip or chip guard protecting them.

Harrington's Books are definitely the best for strategy.

I've gotten good nuggets of info from the interviews and hand of the day sections on Cardplayer's Circuit podcasts.

The 10k event you will start with more chips than I did. I pretty much played ultra tight the whole time only playing top 10 hands unless there were a couple of limpers in front of me. Keys to success are having position and don't let your stack get too low.

Try and play a few small buy in tournaments to get some experience. One thing that messed up my game was that online I have no problem stealing blinds with less than premium hands. The first couple of times I tried to steal blinds I got played back at and I got extremely timid after that. To the point where once I got into the money, I made a disastrous play because I was scared to bust out.

All I can think of right now. I'll post more if I think of anything else.

Re: Tourney advice appreciated

The Harrington books looked good, I just wanted some confirmation from people who had read them. Thanks for the leads, esp the tips scottwire...exactly the things I was looking for. If anyone has anymore suggestions, keep them coming. Again, they are greatly appreciated.

Re: Tourney advice appreciated

My advice would be to play in some local live tournaments and bluff a LOT so you get used to the feeling of getting caught. That's probably the number 1 reason people get timid in live games.

Hey, out of curiosity, what local casinos do you play at? Are you near Argosy or Belterra? Caesars? They all have tournaments quite frequently, although I personallly have not yet been fortunate enough to participate.

Re: Tourney advice appreciated

HOH books (I and II are great haven't read my copy of III yet), play tournaments online ('stars deepstack tournaments come to mind) and live events. The live events are going to be crapshoots until you get up to the $530 level so don't expect to pick up strategy practice there, you just need to get a routine down.

If you don't really want to learn how to play tournaments and just want to have a chance while enjoying your vacation, check out a book called "Kill Phil". It's basically a strategy so that newbies can have a chance against pros. It uses big all-in moves to negate the pro's edge, assuming they aren't going to want to play for all of their chips preflop. It's definitely not an optimal strategy and you might already do better just playing your normal NLHE game but the information may be of use to you if you get say, Daniel Negranu and Phil Ivey at your table
