I played in the 1k WSOP prelim event and here's some advice.
1) Don't look at your cards until it is your turn to act.
2) Do the same routine every time. MikeJ from
PSO gave me great advice which is pull up one card for 3 seconds and memorize it, then the other card for 3 seconds and memorize it. This will allow you to not give anything away by taking the same amount of time to process the hand and hopefully not react differently whether the hand is AA or 72.
3) Before you fold to someone's bet, look at your cards one more time before you toss them in. Just a precaution, especially early if you're nervous or late when you're tired.
4) always have your hands on your cards or a chip or chip guard protecting them.
Harrington's Books are definitely the best for strategy.
I've gotten good nuggets of info from the interviews and hand of the day sections on Cardplayer's Circuit podcasts.
The 10k event you will start with more chips than I did. I pretty much played ultra tight the whole time only playing top 10 hands unless there were a couple of limpers in front of me. Keys to success are having position and don't let your stack get too low.
Try and play a few small buy in tournaments to get some experience. One thing that messed up my game was that online I have no problem stealing blinds with less than premium hands. The first couple of times I tried to steal blinds I got played back at and I got extremely timid after that. To the point where once I got into the money, I made a disastrous play because I was scared to bust out.
All I can think of right now. I'll post more if I think of anything else.
