Should I feel bad

I was playing some .25 .50 no limit with some friends last night. There was a hand that came up and I am wondering if I should feel bad or maybe should of given the guy half the pot. Let me know what you guys think.

The board was 10 J Q A 4. There was no flush draw. I had a K the guy to my right bets $10 on the turn which was the Ace. The Ace gave me the str8 and I was assuming it gave him the str8 too. SO I called the $10 when the river came a 4, I went all in for another $25 there was about $28 in the pot. The person I was playing had only been playing for a few months and wasn't sure what to do. He had a King and showed it to me as he folded. He said he wasn't sure if he could be beat and didn't want to risk $25. I flipped up my King and took down the pot. Am I a bad person?

Re: Should I feel bad

If it was a friend of mine, I would have split the pot with him. In a casino, I would have told him to get bent.

We've done this before at STANK's.

Re: Should I feel bad

If he is a good friend, you can tell him that he can't be beat and its a split pot.

If he is a really good friend, you can take it down and call him a sucker

Usually, I'd say the pot is all yours. But since you know this guy, and its at his house, I also say its OK to split the pot with him. After all if he is just learning and he is your pal, you should look after him.

But no, you're not wrong to keep the pot. But for pals new to the game, I would have chopped it. Besides, it may keep him coming around and playing cards with you.

Re: Should I feel bad

why feel bad?

In poker, that's how you make money. You profit by the mistakes of others.

It was a lesson learned by your friend.

Re: Should I feel bad

I don't see how you can split the pot. The guy folded without calling your bet. The cards can't speak in this case. Are you gonna review his play of every other hand he folds and adjust the pot as if he'd played it optimally?

The real problem here is that if either you or he feels bad about him losing that pot, then you're playing at stakes that are too high for a friendly game with novices.

Re: Should I feel bad

If he showed it, and I felt that he was genuinely confused, I'd chop it, explain the reason and make sure that he understood that the next time, I'd be taking the pot for myself.

Otherwise its too harsh a lesson in my book.

Re: Should I feel bad

i wouldn't have split that pot with my grandmother.

seriously. i would have had a talk with her later about how to read the board, and told her she better not fold the nuts again.
