Tournaments vs. Cash games

I host a tournament series at my house every month and I've come to the conclusion that I can win my own tournaments. Ever. During the tournament I'm usually busy with people asking questions or moving players from table to table and so on. Im guessing my concentration level must not be up to par. At other people's houses I seem to have very little trouble getting into the money. Even at my house after a few more people get out of the tourney, we start a cash game. Noone can TOUCH me in the cash game. Mind you we play very small stakes (25c-50c NL) but I never leave with less than $50 profit in my pocket. I guess my question is, does anyone else have trouble playing in their own tournaments? I guess this is aimed more at 20-30 person tournies. I dont really have issues with 6-10 people tournies.

Re: Tournaments vs. Cash games

I don't have a problem playing in a tournament that I'm running, but I've had issues with people saying that I am moving players or doing things to my advantage throughout the tournament. Of course I'm not, but I've decided that I'm either playing or running them just to avoid those situations.

Re: Tournaments vs. Cash games

I was finding that as well. AS a host you're worrying about everyone and if everythings going OK. making sure that you know when ppl are busted out to make sure it's all registered in your software like Tournament Director etc.

If you're not using a software program - do it. TD automatically balances tables for you - it might not do it the "proper" way - but it'll pick someone - and say something like "Move jonnyRockets from Table 1 to Table 2 seat 6" etc.

Works out great.

Also - the new TD2 has ability for clicky buttons on the screen - so anyone can click "Bust out" and click on the players name - and good to go.

If you want an example of somoe of the stats it can keep track of - see my webpage - click on the first game link up top.

www.jonnyrockets.net

putting on a tourney without the software , in my opinion, would be really tough.

Jon

Re: Tournaments vs. Cash games

Wanted to add - being a dedicated dealer can have an adverse affect on your game I find. So make sure there are multiple people who know how to deal at the table. So if you want to switch off you can.

Re: Tournaments vs. Cash games

I suffer the same fate at my monthly 30 -40 player tournaments. I've won numerous times at other venues, averaged in the money over 65% of the tournaments I played last year, and am much ahead of the game for the last 2 years, however in that time I've held 17 events at my house where my finishes are mediocre at best. I've discussed this with many of my best buds and one of the main explanations is the distraction caused by hosting the game. Trying to keep things on the up and up, and/or dealing with someone bitching about something trivial, changing tables, etc.....

Some of the worst times for me at my game are whenever I have to uphold a rule to keep the integrity of the game - or enforce a 'lateness' rule on someone who hasn't called to be blinded out, but shows up 30 minutes late still hoping to get in(no way). This all bothers me and distracts me, usually resulting in me donking off some chips before I get the emotional ship righted again - it sucks....

I'd stop hosting, but have around 30 regulars who feel it's the best time of the month for them, they are all my friends, and I like having the darn things. But, I'm resigned to not winning one.......EVER. If it happens I'll be suprised. Imagine my sons 20 years from now.....Wow Dad, nice plaque for all the past winners or your tournaments - - - How come your name's not on it??? It's gonna be embarassing to say the least......

YIKES!!!!!!!
