Chips: 507 | | | Getting off tilt You just made a mental error and missed a value bet, your bluff was called,
your pocket aces were cracked by the hammer, and your nut straight was beaten by some shmuck with a runner runner flush.
Congadulations, you are now officially on TILT . What do you do to overcome this most heinous of poker afflictions?

Your best bet is to just walk away do something else and clear your head. Come back later when your calm and feeling good about the game again |

Chips: 507 | | | Re: Getting off tilt I tend to tell the boys to fold my hands for the next few minutes and go outside for a smoke and some air. After that, I will resolve to play tight for a few hands to get back into the groove (usually lasts until I get a good hand to play).

fold any hands that are marginal but that you might play in the situation if you weren't tilting.
before you act, ask yourself why you chose the play you're about to make. if you suspect your reasons may be emotional, fold (or check).
recognize the physiological and psychological symptoms that you're tilted.
my signs:
phsyio: flushed face, shallow breathing, lack of focus on the action
pyscho: intense urge to bluff, less intense urge to play marginal hands, slight urge to punch someone.
be very careful until the above symptons go away. |

Chips: 14,006 | | | Re: Getting off tilt First, train yourself not to tilt to avoid this issue in the first place. Check your emotions at the door. Most tilt is due to our reaction to the randomness of the cards, which is silly when you think about it. Remember that poker is not a macho contest to determine who is the Alpha Male -- its just cards. Enter the game with a proper mindset to avoid tilt, and you've won half the tilt battle.
If you do happen to tilt, ask why you are tilting. If it is due to your own mistakes, then stop playing and resume some other day.
If it is due to the randomness of cards, remind yourself that the cards are random, that you rarely have a lock on a hand, and that there is almost always a possibility (however slight) that your opponent will outdraw you. When you get all the money in the pot on the turn as a 90% favorite, occasionally (10% of the time, in fact) your opponent will win in that situation. How can you get angry at the random order of the cards?
If your tilt is due to the comments or behavior of your opponents (and you are on-line), TURN THE CHAT OFF! Effective, quick and easy. Focus on your play and your opponents play. If you are live and the opponent is getting under your skin, consider taking a break, or leaving, or using the "schooling effect" with the other players to combat the bully (another discussion for another day, since I think you're asking about tilt on-line). |

Remind myself that short-term can be brutal, long term is the important thing.
I remind myself how much I'm up in this game (long term).
If none of this works, I take the rest of the day off.
If I'm not up long term in whatever particular game this occurs in, I spend some time re -evaluating my play and whether that particular game is time well spent.
And breath! |
