Play AK with the Monkey (Foxwoods 2/5 NL)

Not that intricate a hand, but posted for fun nonetheless. Hero is in the 7 seat, and his image is TIGHT. Tight and solid. I've probably played 4-5 hands in the last hour. My stack is around 540.

A couple good regulars are at the table, in the 2 and 4 seats. The rest of the table made it good, combo weak/tight and losey/fishy. Villian is in the 9 seat, a bit of a gambler, and he liked to get involved in big pots with moderate holdings. Villian's stack is close to 700.

Hero is UTG, and picks up A K . Hero opens to 15. Seat 8 folds, Villian [UTG+2] re-raises to 45, all fold. Hero calls. Pot is $97.

Does anyone prefer a re-raise here?

Flop: A T 3

Re: Play AK with the Monkey (Foxwoods 2/5 NL)

No, I don't like a re-raise at all, see as how if he is wired, you simply have a drawing hand, and if he puts in a big bet on that flop, I would seriously consider the possibility that he has 10/10.

I think that if it were me,and he bet into that flop, I would raise about 2x his bet, and see what happens.

He will either

Raise: you are probably beat, trips or 2 pair
Call: you are ahead, punish the bastard
Fold: Yippee

But I could be way wrong.

I am pretty much in complete agreement with dawnsboy on this one. I think your call was fine.

After the flop, I would either put in a decent bet, or even possibly check to see what he will do. If he pushes in a lot of money, I would put him on trips, or possibly a flush draw.

Note: Hero is UTG, so first to act after the flop.

Re: Play AK with the Monkey (Foxwoods 2/5 NL)

First of all I must echo what my good friend Norman Chad always says, "too many people go broke with AK." That is why I agree that the call preflop was good.
This flop is a pretty good flop for AK, yes you could think that villian has TT, but TPTK vs. a set on the flop is one of those very tricky situation.

Now you say that villian is a gambler, so he could pretty much have a pocket pair or even just two paint cards. That's why I would say you bet into him, if he has to face cards you don't want to let him draw for free. This is true for the flush draw as well.

The problem I see with checking is that you allow him to keep control of the hand. If he's a gambler and you're seen as tight, he would probably bet no matter what he held, which could shut you out of the pot. Or you could be allowing him to take a free card for his draw, as noted above. If he does bet and you call you'll have no idea where you stand in the hand. If you bet and he raises then you'll be able to get away from the hand if you think you're beat. I would try to win this hand right then and there, don't try to get fancy. Eventhough he's a gambler, hopefully he can realize that if a tight person raises then calls preflop, then bets out on the flop that you must have made something.

Re: Play AK with the Monkey (Foxwoods 2/5 NL)

When you called his re-raise, you indicated that you hold either AK, AQ or a big pocket pair since you've played tight so far. He knows that you have a good hand regardless of the flop. So, there's no need to check on the flop unless you want to let him know that you didn't hit the Ace. That IMO would be a very foolish play. Suppose he holds pocket Kings or Queens (very likely hands), with 2 clubs on board, he's not going to give you a chance to outdraw him. So he'll most likely push all-in or make a big bet - neither of which puts you in a good position to call since he might have possibly made a set of Aces, 10s.

On flops like this, being out of position is favourable since you can dictate control. Put a good pot sized bet of $80. If he calls, (remember, he knows you have a good hand, he will not slow play) you have him beat, and if the turn card looks harmless, check to him: let him bet into it thinking he still has the best hand and then pounce on him on the turn with a big raise. If he raises on the flop, muck it you're probably beat.

Re: Play AK with the Monkey (Foxwoods 2/5 NL)

I'll post my thoughts and what I put the villian on a little later. I felt I had a good enough read to check a comfortable flop. For now, on to the flop action:

Hero raises UTG to 15 w/ A K , 1 fold, UTG+2 re-raises to 45, 7 folds, Hero calls. (pot is 97)

Flop: A T 3

Hero checks. Villian bets 50. Hero raises to 150. Villian thinks and re-raises to 250. (pot is 497) Hero ???

Re: Play AK with the Monkey (Foxwoods 2/5 NL)

I would be a little scared at this point, but no way would I fold to his bet. I don't think I would be willing to commit my entire stack at this point, but I would definately call at least and see the turn.
