Stud Hi/Lo discussion

THe Omaha Hi/Lo discussion was helpful to me. Now for my favorite game.

I am a fairly decent 7 card stud and 7 card stud Hi/Lo player. I understand starting hands pretty well and usually know when to lay a hand down, when to push, bluff etc. I played in a pretty tough field of 100 in the recent WSOP Circuit 7 card stud event and finished what I consider a respectable 30th. Out of the money, but considering the field of mostly older men (i'm 37 and was young in this field) was somewhat happy with my performance. Got bluffed out of a pot that crippled me and I almost called - I wish he never showed the bluff

On to the discussion: Since I now have a few dollars at PS I have played some Stud Hi/Lo at the 4¢ and 8¢ limits. I have done well at that limit. But my couple of forays into the 25¢ and 50¢ have been mixed results.

I think my failing in Hi/Lo is once I am 4 to a low (4th or 5th street - unless checked around to 6th street) and am sure that it is the best draw looking at others cards - I will chase it to the river. If I catch, I am usually winning at least half the pot (unless I catch a baby straight as is often the case in Hi/Lo). Now if it is heads up I do not chase as much and need to have a possiblitly of winning the hi and lo.

Any 7 card stud players want to comment?

Thats the problem with the split games - many times you are forced to chase the draws. In Stud/8, having 4 to a low on 4th or 5th is a very strong position. If you have a lot of live draws - this would be the time to be aggressive. Especially if you are obviously the only low or the best low. You need to punish the chasers.

If you do not hit on 6th - then slow down if you can (the highs may still be pushing the pot).

Making the low on 5th or 6th is also a very good time to be aggressive. While you are only playing for 1/2 the pot, you will usually get all of the high chasers in with you. When luck is with you , the cards come to fill your low st8 and you scoop.

I think that both Stud8 and O8 are great games. The profit potential is huge with both - but so are the swings. The split pot just creates so many 2 way chases that you will have to donate many times. Heck - played some O8 a few days back. Saw like 4 flops in an hour. On 2, had locked high only hand both times and lost to rivered full houses. Happens.
