had similar situation a few weeks ago...both had Ax in hand...flop came with 2 A's guys were just going to chop it....then I said wait a minute...your forgetting your kickers! Then both of them at the same time said ...."HUH?"...."OH YEA!!!!"

My drinking began to intesify after that.....playing with fish can be difficult at times!!

My drinking cost me a mean hand very similar to this a few years ago.

It still haunts me in my dreams at times... Not because of the money, but because of my foolishness. One of my worst f-ups at a poker table, but lesson learned.

It was just a 25/50 cent ring game with 8 other partiers after a day of sun, adult beverages and BBQ.


I had a Q 9 in the hole and I call the BB as dealer and...

The flop came up Q 4 9

I think I've got it locked, top two pair, and bet big (ok big at these stakes is like $5).

The turn comes up Q

Feeling all cocky (and buzzed) I'm certain that its all mine now with trips and just double the blind to keep in the callers coming in.

The river comes up the 2

And I don't know why (well yes I do, too many ales) I freeze at that last heart. 4 hearts on the board, and I have none. 2 other players are left and I don't have one heart.

At that point I felt it "amatuer" to recheck my cards when pushing strong but when the other player at the table went all in, I folded.

It wasn't until I flipped my cards (being the good drunk that I can be) did I realize that I folded a house to the flush...

It was about a $55 pot at that point. I stopped drinking that night, and paid one of the "runners" to get me some Perrier for the rest of the night. I've lamented that hand for a long, long time now, but it taught me 2 new lessons:

OTB's Rule #12 "Check your cards as OFTEN AS YOU WANT"

OTB's Rule #11 "Don't drink too much when playing for real money."




EDITED to show a closer resemblance to the actual hand. lol thanks jim. I just started typing and away I went. It was a while ago, but I still see that Q 9 tripped and the river 9 against a 4 heart flush on the board, and it makes me ill.

The end result is the same... heh

The cards may not be an exact recollection of the hand, but there was 4 to the flush on the board, and well, I don't even want to say it againl.

Ouch! I had a similar thing happening to me playing online poker a few days ago. I had and the flop came . After some raises and re-raises I was all in against one player. All he had was . What happens? Board comes runner-runner club and he wins with a king-high flush against my queen-high flush. I must have had like a 92% chance to win on the flop?? Bad beats like that really pisses me off!

Ahhhh just had another one on Saturday, for the ring game in honor of my wife's birthday.

This is the THIRD HAND OF THE GAME.

We all just sat down and stuffed fresh $20 bills into the cash box. (25/50 cent blinds)

My cards

I limp in to get callers, still feeling out some of the newer players, and the whole table wants to see the flop. Everyone calls the blind.

Flop comes up

One or two callers until its my turn.

I'm on the nut flush draw with decent odds to get it.

My $2.00 raise scares off all but one player.

Turn comes

I've got you now!

I push all in for around $18.00, the pot is only like $6.50 at this point. Sure I might have milked it for the turn, but it was early in the game and I wanted to shut the hand down for a meager win early on.

The one guy left CALLS ME and shows his cards.



He laughs and realizes that we are at exactly the same chip count. His face goes sour when he sees my cards.

I'm already counting the money.....

And what does the river bring?



The good news is that I rebought for another $20 and ended up about even (it was a struggle just to get that $20 back!) and 5 of us ended up playing from like 9pm until SUNRISE at 6am when we scattered like roaches to find a dark space to rest our eyes.

Still can't wait to play next week.
