you are like the last bail of hay in a 20 year drought - the donkeys stampede to get at you!!! | Well, I got 800 hands in tonight. Got AA a total of 5 times... and took down the blinds 5 times! It was awesome! Never lost my stack (at the cash tables) all night!!!
So while I was making $200 back towards my losses the other night, I decided to take imthatguy's advice and play some SnG's. See, I've never EVER cashed at a real-money SnG online... always take a bad beat or catch some rotten luck to bust out on (or near) the bubble. Well, here were the outcomes tonight: Doubled up early when I flopped 9's-full and some idiot got it all-in with A-high... then lost a big hand to a runner-runner straight. Have just been stealing blinds occasionally since then.

The guy on my right, MajorD1, has literally played every hand until this one... But I figured out the trick: Don't get dealt AA!! Never saw them; never busted! Never got sucked-out on at all, actually. Saw 3 other players get it all-in with the "Pocket Blanks" and lose... Here's what can happen if you make the mistake of getting it all-in with AA (and one of my best suck-out performances ever, en route to taking down the SnG):

And of course I was playing cash tables at the same time. All together, played just under 600 hands. I had AA 9 times. Got 2 walks from the BB, took down the blinds 4 times, took down a pot on a flop (won about 5 x BB net), and lost this all-in pre-flop hand. Oh, and just remembered, finished 9th in another SnG: AA vs. 44 pre-flop. Anyway, still haven't won a showdown with AA since 2007 (live or online).

OK, how about this: When I FINALLY win a showdown with AA (live or online), it'll be my last post to this thread where I whine about losing with AA. Well, except when I take a really horrendous beat, like lose to the Hammer (a la "Achievement Unlocked"; nearly did it above, but he had 75o, not 72o), or flop Aces-Full and lose to rivered quads or straight-flush, etc.
I was going to say " the first time I win a showdown with AA this year", but the verdict is still out on that one. I mean, it's been 2 months, and over 10,000 hands! (no, not 10,000 times with AA... that would really suck! But a few dozen times with AA is bad enough.)

When I'm playing, I don't readily recognize flush-draw+third-pair as a big
drawing hand. I'm going to have to watch for those from now on. | I cracked AA last weekend on a similar hand. 7-player SnG-style LIVE tourney. Early stages, and allowed 1 re-buy per person that no one has used yet.
Short stack, who had just lost half his stack, min-raised UTG. I had AJo and just called, knowing full-well he would probably push on the flop with any decent cards.
Flop was Q-J-X, all diamonds. UTG pushes. I check my cards and have ... so middle-pair plus the nut flush draw. I figure he could have made that move with any decent cards... I could be winning against TT-88, AK; or I could be losing to AQ, KQ, KK, AA, QQ, JJ, ... where an A is also an out against a few of those hands, and a J could win it for me in other cases. Or he could have made the flush (most likely K-high), in which case I've got 7 outs to the nut flush. I was getting about 3:1 from the pot with 2 players to act behind me; figured that was pretty close to the odds I needed, and that the players behind would most likely just call to "check-it-down"...
I called. Players behind me folded. UTG flipped over AA. I caught a diamond on the river. Moral of the story: don't min-raise with AA from UTG when you're the small stack.
(that, or AA is a drawing hand; don't play it unless you have odds to chase your set! ) |
