Multi tournament win, or not?

Can you say you won the tournament if you decide to chop when it gets heads up? Played tonight at my local cardroom - $40 buy-in, 158 players. No memorable hands or great moves. Mostly just made good decisions at the final table. First place paid $1400, second place paid $800. Mutual agreement to chop for $1100 each. Does this count as a win, or does it deserve an * ?

Re: Multi tournament win, or not?

Taking home $1100 in a $40 buy in would be good enough for me. Who was the chip leader prior to the chop?

Was it a win technically no, but was it a win for your wallet, yes.

You played solid and you took home some nice cash, good game.

Re: Multi tournament win, or not?

I would vote that you can count it as a win. Either way congrats on the $1100.

Re: Multi tournament win, or not?

Depends who you're talking to. If it's poker geeks, you can say "158 players, the final two us chopped." But if it's the 99.9% of the rest of the public, friends and family, yeah, you won. Congrats!

The other player had me outchipped ~ 60% vs. 40%. He is the one who suggested the chop. At that point the blinds were at 30,000 - 60,000 with a 5,000 ante. There were about 950,000 chips in play, so we each had less than 10 BB left. Pretty much a crap shoot at that point so I agreed to the chop. I figured it was better to pocket a sure extra $300. No bracelet or title anyway, just cash.

Nice work on getting the even chop then! I would have done the same as you, and I would call that a win.

Re: Multi tournament win, or not?

Count it as a cash. And a no decision if the win/no win ratio is that important.

I may chop the cash but I definitely want to settle the tourny.

I personally wouldn't count it as a win unless we either played it out after the chop, or as part of the deal decided who got to claim first place (usually the chip leader).

In any case, congrats, it's tough to get through a field that large.

Re: Multi tournament win, or not?

Nice cash regardless of win/or no win.

I vote for a win. you were outchipped 60/40 but split the cash 50/50. sounds like a win to me. haha

Re: Multi tournament win, or not?

I've been in that same situation before a few times, and I did not personally feel that was a win for me. Not saying that I did not like the chop or I wasn't happy with the money, but to get a win without chopping is a complete gratification with no questions left.

Congratulations!!
