i got shot down

well, usually when i get a bad beat, i just rebuy and keep playing my game. yesterday was a bit different.

we were playing NLHE cash game and i was at the top of my game. i bought in for the max (100 x BB), and playing my best poker i managed to more than triple my buyin.
the night was almost over, we decided to play the last hand. i was counting my winnings, prepared to lay down even kings only one other deep stack at the table (he bought in 3 times for the max, and had recovered to about 400 x BB).

last hand delt, i'm on the BB with K9 suited and limp in. flop is K93, i call a small bet, other deep stack (to my left) does the same.
turn is another K, so board is now K93K, i have the nuts.

i raise, other deep stack reraises. i tell him i have the nuts and move all in. he calls nontheless and shows AK.

river: bullet

everything gone. all my hard work destroyed by the last card of the evening and no chance to rebuy to get it out of my mind...

what a beat

Re: i got shot down

Ouch. That's a tough one. Even betting the flop harder probably isn't going to help against TPTK.

BTW, congrats on your 100th post!

Re: i got shot down

I don't know if you were serious about laying down K-K since it was the last hand and you wanted to book a nice win. But if you were serious then you should have played this hand the same way. If you didn't want to get coolered/bad beated for a big pot on the last hand then you should have never looked at your hand and then check folded the flop.

I'm not saying I would have done this, but the way you make it sound... you didn't want to play a big pot since it was the last hand. So don't!... just check fold the flop blind. I've seen people do this many times in my homegame. Again, I'm not saying I would do this. I can remember a cash game we had where I picked up Q-Q, made a standard raise OTB, flopped the nuts (Q-9-3) and had two guys (essentially) shove in front of me. I didn't fold because I wanted to book a win. I called and felted both of them (1 had KQ and 1 had JT).

If the K-K thing was a joke, then I went off on a tangent, but I don't think it was a joke...

Re: i got shot down

I think it was a joke since he limped from the button with K9....
(BW are we going to have to talk about bad beat thread etiquette again?)

also good job of getting it in with the nutz OP, cant do anything else but that. tough beat, but it would have happened whether it was the 53rd hand of the night or the last. keep plugging away.

Re: i got shot down

bad beat thread etiquette? i missed that thread, i guess.

but i thought the same thing as woody. prepared to lay down kk / playing k9...that just didn't compute for me.

Re: i got shot down

yeah I was just making that up. I just thought that putting the goofy smiley face after saying you were willing to lay down KK meant you were j/k.

I try not to write too many bad beat threads, but I guess I just feel like writing 2 paragraphs of analysis about one silly sentence in the OP was kind of rubbing salt in the wounds.

I will respectively retract my complaint, and apologize for the threadjack.

Re: i got shot down

i ment i would have laid kings down to a big reraise pf.

i know i made a few mistakes in that hand, which where the result of a couple of things.
i had about 310 BB and wanted to keep 300xBB to make the payout easy. i was ready to throw a bit into the last hand, fold if it gets too expensive, and leave the rest for the house. i know i should have raised on the flop, but i didn't want to reach into my 300xBB stack and there was a flush draw on the board so i just called, still prepared to lay it down if i wouldn't make something big. well, the 2nd K made the flush and my full house, so i had to go into my stack...

it was the result of a combination of things, and bad play was a big part of it. that's the worst about it

Bad play? You had the nuts, and got a guy to call you...with only 3 outs. GOOD GOD that is a GREAT play. Well done. If I had 10x the buy-in I woulda played it and not thought twice.

You had 3 buy-ins...and your opponent had quadrupled his buy-ins. Know what that says to me? You have a very juicy and profitable game. Stick with it, play exactly like you have been...and you will make that back. AND A LOT MORE.

Sounds like a goldmine.
