Chips: 96 | | | First Casino Cash Game! 1/2 NL at the Showboat in AC
Was a bit nervous, only bought in for the min, $60...45 min later cashed out with $105. I couldn't believe how manically loose it was; $15-$25 pre-flop raises were pretty common. The one time I was able to limp in for only $2 I had picked up the Ac Ts and hit two pair. Wound up raking in a pot of $105. Shortly there after I drew the line and cashed out when the $125-$150 all-ins started.
It was fun, but as others have suggested, I think next time Resorts might be more my speed, but all they were spreading was Limit when I was there.
Incidentally, I was concerned I was playing too loose. This was just the ticket to tighten me up . It was small stakes compared to what some play, but it was a real good experience builder for me. |

They are know for the locals and sharks, but most don't waste time at the lower stakes. Get a little bottle of hand sanitizer if you play at the Taj. The chips are dirtier than the ones that hurricane Katrina gunked up. |

FWIW,
Caeser's, the Taj, and the Showboat were doing pretty good business for Sunday-Monday, Harrah's was dead, and Resorts had two tables max; most of the time they only had one.
There was a WSOP event kicking off this week at Caesers and it was pretty crowded Sunday. Everyone was doing 60 min 300 max for 1/2. |

There's a lot to do in casino poker when you're new, get used to the mechanics of the card room before you hit the big-bet game, IMO.

Also would a buy in of $100 be enough? |

Also would a buy in of $100 be enough? | I'm not smoore but I'll throw in my 2 cents. 2/4 is the lowest they go but it's tough to beat the rake. It varies, but I think you can buy in most places for $60. I just went with a full rack my first try at 2/4. I did that twice and wanted to beat my head against a wall. The pace is choppy at 2/4. Players can't/don't post blinds properly. They sit contemplating a $2 raise like it's the WSOP and act out of turn. Other times it is like the have the call any bet box checked off. I suggest trying it out, but don't be afraid to move when the frustration sets in. Find a 4/8 table and wait for good cards. Good luck and have fun. |

Chips: 1,861 | | | Re: First Casino Cash Game! Yeah, 2/4 is usually the lowest it goes and the rake is brutal at that level. Just play for fun, don't try to "earn". $100 is a great buyin for 2/4. If you pay attention to the dealer when there's nothing to really watch you'll pick up the flow of card room poker quickly. Remember, the dealer turns over hundreds of hands per day and it's in his or her best interest to keep the game moving smoothly. Practice reading the board, figure out what the nuts are at each stage. You'll notice some experienced dealers will get ready to push the pot before the cards are even exposed. They are reading the players that well and know with a good degree of certainty which way the thing is going.
Learn how to keep track of the pot, keep in your head whether the dealer is over or under raking the pot (don't say anything though). Calculate the odds for each draw out there and figure out whether or not weak made hands should bet.
Once you're moving along with these tasks at a decent clip, start to pay attention to your neighbors. Watch the hands of the people immediately next to you. You'll be surprised how much info you get just from their hands. I hardly ever look people in the eye at the poker table, body language and hand gestures tell me all I need to know.
It's information overload when you first step into a card room, that's why I recommend just donking it up at a 2/4 limit game, have a few brews and flirt with the waitress. So much fun.
