Another B&M Lesson Learned - Don't Show for Free, Square the pot

Scene: Bicycle Club, Bell Gardens, CA. $3-$6 Omaha Hi/Lo w/Kill. Donkey in Seat 1(shifty sleazebag constantly eyeing the Pineapple board). Me in seat 8.

Me and Seat 9 had just split a ~$120 pot the hand before; 4 players left the table to walk off their losses.

New Hand, Me on Button, Donkey in BB. Seat 2 calls BB. Seat 7 folds to me, I call w/, playing the rush in position. Seat 9 folds the SB. Donkey raises from BB, seat 2 calls, as do I.

Flop comes . Donkey bets, Seat 2 raises short all-in, I smooth call (my 1st mistake for not re-raising ), Donkey calls (dead giveaway - no J).

Pre-turn, sleazeDonkey says, "I check, We check all the way, OK?" I say "sorry, I'm betting". Turn comes , possible low, but no flush. Donkey Checks, I bet, he calls angrily. Dealer does not pull in chips for the sidepot, probably in case another low comes (my 2nd mistake for not insisting, since he's obviously going hi ).

River is . Donkey checks, I bet, Donkey does NOT call, but throws cards on the table and loudly announces his XX. Now I am Donkey #2 , because I show my FH, mistakenly thinking he had called. Seat 2 folds his xxx for the main, I scoop.

What I SHOULD have done is insist the dealer muck Seat 1's cards and push the sidepot to me, (since he hadn't called), and then showed for the main pot. Best case, the guy throws another bet in to call before I show. Worst case, I win anyway. In all cases, SleazeDonk does not get the satisfaction.

Greedy? A-Retentive? I really don't think so, as I would just be protecting my pot. I don't believe in giving away any information for free. He would have seen my cards anyway, but I gave him the possible chance to claim the sidepot without actually putting his money in. If in fact I did not have him beat, I may have mucked, I am certain SleazeDonk would have tried to take it down.

Lesson Learned: Square the pot before showing down.

You'd think I'd have learned that by now after watching Sam Farha do it for 2+ seasons on HSP.
