Chips: 9,309 | | | Bad Bellagio Story True story from the daily afternoon Bellagio tourney, yesterday.
My buddy is in the $540 Sunday afternoon tourney and doing pretty well. about 100 players, pays 9. About 27 left and he has an average chipstack when I talk to him at bout 5. We have 7pm dinner reservations, and I'm not sure he's making it.
I arrive to the restaurant, and his wife is there looking unhappy. She says that she's not sure if he's even coming to dinner.
He was in the tourney, all-in with AQs vs 55. The cards are up, the bets are in, no flop yet. His wife calls him to see how he's doing, and he answers his phone, says "I can't talk" and hangs up. The dealer tells him his hand is dead for talking on a cell phone and pushes the chips to the guy with 55.
Everybody at the table, including the other guy, protests and the floor comes over and says "How many times do I have to tell you guys - no cell phones." She laughs at my buddy, and that's the end of the story. He's out about 20th.
He made it to Bartolotta an hour later and took it pretty well. He said he wouldn't make that mistake again.

Chips: 113 | | | Re: Bad Bellagio Story This just is bad form on the part of the Tourney Director. The money is already in the middle and the cards are flipped over. At that point I can go get a burger, call mom in Texas and my hand should still not be declared dead. At that point I can get no more advice or advantage in the hand.
Now, if there is a house rule that says no cell phones at all, at any point. Then your buddy is stupid for even having it turned on, much less answering it.

It would have been nice for the dealer to say something before your friend answered, but maybe it was on vibrate and the dealer didn't have a chance. I'm sure it's been drilled into the dealer's heads not to allow cell phones, with no exceptions. Once you make an exception for -after an all-in , then it creates gray areas and you'll get nothing but arguments. Keeping fast to a rule, makes it easy to enforce, there's no"ifs ands or buts". Sorry for your friend's loss, next time, don't answer the phone, wait until the hand is done, fold your next hand, step away fromt he table and call them back.

An 86 person $1000 tourney had $83,420 in the prize pool, the winner received $30,865
So in their $500+40 tourneys a hundred person tourney should net the winner $18,500
