Hi guys
A couple of weeks ago I went to a little tournament with a 60$ buy-in. About 60 players participated and finally I won the tournament and 1300$ plus a freeseat on a 350$ buy in tourney.
Ok to the important part: At this 350$ tournament the following happend:
7 players were at the table (about 13 players were totally left in the tourn.)
My chipcount was about: 6000$ at the table I was in the middle of the chip ranks (not sure)
Blinds were: 400 / 800
I got QQ: now what happend:
Position 1: All in with 1400
Position 2: Fold
Position 3: Fold
Position 4 (I): Call: 1400
Position 5 (Dealer): Fold
Position 6 (Small Blind): Fold
Position 7 (Big Blind): Call 1400
The pot was right now: 4600
The flop comes: K, J, 4 (rainbow suits)
Big Blind bets: $1600 (He had about 3000$ left)
I start to think, I watch the player and I am damn sure: No he has no King! I think about 2minutes and went all-in with my $4600! He calls with his $3000! He shows a Jack and a 8 offsuit! I am happy and show my Queen Queen! I think: "Yes you are a genious"
Turn comes: 5 (still happy)
River comes: a Jack (no longer happy)
The guy from Position 1 had an ace and something else he didnt hit anything... Big blind got triple jacks....
I lost most of my chips and was ruined... I left then the tournament as 11th ranked (top 6 were in the money) ...
Did I play wrong? Should I have raised before the flop? Should I have folded after big blind bet?
Please tell me your opinion...
Regards Pacome
You went in with the best hand. You made a read and you were correct. How else could you play it? The alternative is to sit back and get blinded out, hoping that others fall out before you do.
A guy said I should have raised instead of called with QQ... I would have been to greedy because I called to get at least one more caller... and another guy said I had a chipcount which would have allowed me to wait for clearer situations instead of risking so many chips....
we're you in the money in the tourney where you got 11th? First you should have raised all in preflop. The BB should not have called on J8
BTW you made the correct bet post flop. The guy was behind in the hand and got lucky.
He probably figured you had at least a King in your hand and might get lucky by hitting two pair or someting. I can't say that you were a huge favorite, but you odds were probably better than 4:1, but I'll have to check that.
The only reason to call your all in would be if he had an over pair, flopped a set or even (yikes) two pair. which he did not. Bad beat but that's poker.
On the other hand: I read in a book that with QQ you want to see the flop cheaply because if a King or an Ace flops you are beaten... What about that and I had still 3 players behind me...
I would have raised. If you were willing to go all in on the hand after K flopped, you should have done it preflop to narrow down the field. QQ is just to risky to try and slow play, or play against more than 1 player.
