Cool bad beat or not...

I have to tell you about a hand I had last week in a live tourney, and let me know if you think it was a bad beat or not.

96 players started - down to final table - 8 people left - I am BB (3000) with 5500 and the short stack by far. All fold, SB just calls I have 8d -2s. I check, flop comes 8c - 10c - 2c...wow 2 pair. SM says he'll put me all in, I figure 10's?, flush draw? I had to call. SB shows Qc - 7h...Turn comes Jc...I am dying, just my luck...I stood up to leave and knocked my metal folding chair over, I turned around to pick it up...so I didn't see the river come, suddenly theres a little commotion...I hear full house!! Who me? Yep, 2d shows up!! I could not believe it. I got a little run going then and finished 2nd. A couple of people said it was a bad beat and I sucked out. Actually though, I was ahead after the flop and I feel it technically was not a bad beat. I would love to hear your comments.

All bad beat stories must start with kings full.

Otherwise - it is just a matter of one hand outdrawing the other. This happens all of the time. Tell them that poker happens.

In the last CT tournamnet - I had trip aces on the flop.

I get a boat on the turn

I lost to quads

why? - FSU hit quads the same time I hit the boat.

This was not a bad beat - as the board had a 3-flush on the flop. There was a good chance that I was behind - of that a single club would have lost it to me. It just hapopend that the card that improved my hand to near-unbeatable, also gave the other guy the nuts.

When the hand that was ahead when the money went into the center of the table wins, there is no way that it can be called a bad beat.

Re: bad beat or not...

Not a bad beat. You guys just took turns being ahead with each street. First him preflop then you, then him, etc.

He's a 2:1 favorite preflop

You're a 2:1 favorite after the flop

He's a 10:1 favorite after the turn

So yeah, it's a bit of a suckout, but I certainly wouldn't call it a bad beat. When he put you all in he was on a semi-bluff with his draw. Honestly, he probably didn't even expect to get a call.

You were ahead when all the money got in, so no it wasn't a bad beat. Tough beat for the other guy, but not a bad beat.

Re: bad beat or not...

people like to say "bad beat" and imagine that they just saw the craziest thing ever.

this is not a bad beat, nor is is the craziest thing ever. it is slightly zany, though.

I wouldn't even consider it a suckout. A suckout is when you are behind the whole way and then you hit your 2 outer on the river.

You were the BB, there was no action preflop, so he can't be upset that you were around to see the flop. When the money went in post-flop you were ahead, the fact that you fell behind and then hit your 4-outer doesn't change that fact. It is neither a bad beat nor a suckout.

I suppose that if the turn and river cards were different, you didn't hit your boat and he hit is flush on the river, he wouldn't have considered it a bad beat or a suck out by him, just "good play," as if that is possible when you put your money in as as 2:1 underdog.

I will agree with jojo that it was a bit zany, but that is all. Unless you are litterally drawing dead the hand ain't over until all 5 cards hit the board.
