This is a GREAT bit of advice for those just starting out - especially online.
NL is the glamor game right now receiving the most coverage, but limit is where the most consistent money is made. Especially on stars - the $5 limit SnG give you the most bang for your buck as far as experience goes. Better play than the microlimit tables, and cost less then the 2/4 game where "real" poker comes into play.
As Colq says - mistakes do not cost you as much in the limit game. One mistake in NL - and you are done. could happen right away. Limit - you will at least get some time in at the table, even if you are culeless (with the hope that you start learning here).
Once you are comfortable at the $5 SnG - then maybe try the .25/.50 game at stars. There will be some swings as the play is very loose - but this is a beatable game at a level that can be used to build a small bankroll.
Keep the recordkeeping up if you are serious about becomming a better player. It is important to know where you stand. Also, as others have stated, do not play with money that is slated for other things (food, rent, whatever). That is the path to trouble.
