Thumbs down Problems with Modiano Platinum?

I just bought a set of Modiano Platinum cards a few weeks back. I love the look and feel, but after using these cards 3 times I have a total of 3 damaged cards. Has anyone else had problems with durability on these cards? I looked at their website and their replacement program requires $3 a card if you didn't buy them on their site ($1 a card if you did). Not to be cheap, but feel like I'm getting jipped paying $9 to replace three cards a few weeks after I paid $22 plus shipping for these.

Not to mention I really don't want to spend the money replacing these cards if they are going to just keep getting damaged. I emailed Modiano on their site, but they didn't reply to my email. I like the fact that these cards are a bit more stiff than some of the other plastic cards out there. What do you guys recommend for a good set up that will last more than 2 or 3 games? Thanks for you input.

Brian

Re: Problems with Modiano Platinum?

I have two set ups of the Platinum and they are by far my favorite cards.

I've been using them for a weekly game for over a year now and I have had zero problems with them. They still look and feel just like they did the day I opened them up.

Not sure if you just got a bad batch or more likely a person in your group that needs to be a bit more careful about how they look at their cards.

Good luck.

What problem did you have exactly? My first set of Modianos lasted a couple of years before almost every card on the deck developed broken corners during a game. Modianos Plats are still me favorite cards, followed by Fourniers.

Varying degrees of broken corners. On three cards. The thing is they were used in two completely different games, so I don't think that any one person was responsible. I really like the cards, but am disappointed that I've only been able to use them 3 times and now they are useless to me. 2 damaged red cards and 1 blue.

I had a similar problem with the Modiano Platinum Acetate --- happened during the very first use! However, the fact that it also happened to my Gemaco's that night leads me to believe it was something with my players/table/environment rather than the cards (see above link).

I called both Modiano and Gemaco and received replacements cards ($3 for the Modiano (still waiting for the replacement), FREE from Gemaco).

In retrospect, I did keep the cards in the non-heated poker room before play and we were playing our weekly tournament on a non-felted hard wood table. In addition, one of the guys at the table liked to "pop" the cards as he dealt the turn/river.

Since that dreadful night, I have only used casino Paulson's on my hardwood table. I reserve the plastic cards for the cash game that follows on the smaller folding felted table. In addition, I don't keep the cards in the non-heated room anymore. Lastly, when we use the cards, I gently remind players to try to shuffle a bit more gently and ask that they refrain from "popping" the cards for effect. I haven't had any problems since...

Re: Problems with Modiano Platinum?

I think it was on the HPT forums that the guys said they had issues with corners breaking. It was only with the modiano platinum acetate IIRC. If a card is dealt by letting it slide across the surface of the felt, and with a good amount of speed, its corners can break off upon impact with a stack of chips. The card cant 'absorb' the shock of rocketing into a solid mass. You'd have to dig around there for it, but I think there was a video of it, too.

Yes, there's a video somewhere on the web where 3 different brands, including Modiano Plats, were tested to see how much punishment they would take. The Modianos took the most punishment before the corners broke.

Ranger, I still have my Modianos with the broken corners, which 3 cards broke? If I have them intact I'll send them to you.

Hey Johnny, I appreciate that. I've got the poker size, regular index. The cards that are damaged are Red - 2 of clubs and jack of hearts and Blue - 7 of clubs and Ace of spades (the ace is still playable, but has a dent. You can't see it from the blue side, but can see it from the white side).

Thanks again!

I'll check when I get home later, but I only have jumbo index. Not sure if that's ok. I imagine that you'll be able to spot who gets the jumbos just by seeing their reaction when they look at their hole cards! lol
