Modiano and USPC Kem cards bowing...only for me?

Ok, so since I became a card nut and started reviewing plastic cards I've written about all the negative and positive attributes that I notice when using the various cards. I've commented in MANY threads about my experiences with Kem's and Modiano's bowing. I always assumed that this bowing was due to usage and these cards just didn't hold up over time.

Well, I recently started actually paying attention to what's been happening with many of my Modiano decks and my USPC Kems. This revelation came to me after I put the Black & Gold arrows in play for the 1st time for my last league night over a month ago. They were fine during the night and preformed pretty well. As I often do, I left my poker table cluttered with the chips and cards from the last poker game. After apprx 1 week went by, I noticed a bow starting to form in some of the Kem cards. I thought to myself, those darn Kem cards are bowing on me after only 6 hours of play. Then after the 2 weeks went by I noticed that these same handfull of cards had even bigger bows (I mean the sides of the cards were not touching the table) and then it hit me that the cards are not being bowed from play, but something in the humidity in my house (my guess) is making these cards curl up.

Then I had my 'Usual Suspects' moment when I started flashing back on everything that's happened with my bowed Kem and Modiano setups. I remembered when my first set of USPC arrows started to bow that I left them sitting out on top of my bar for a couple of weeks. Same story with my Poker Club and Bike Trophy Modiano's, I left them sitting out at some point too. Those WPT Kem's that had showed a Bow although they were only used once in play, left those out too. I left the Modiano Cristallo's out for a short period and they began to show a slight bow and at the time I wrote it off as a defect of that brand...but I put them away a plastic card holder case, and that stopped the bleeding and now I can't tell these cards ever had a slight bow at all.

The funny thing is, these cards do not bow (at least not as much) when they are sitting in some type of plastic case but if I leave these puppies out for any extended period, it's bow city. Now I have/do leave every type of card (including DN, Copag, Fournier, NTP) that I have out for exteneded periods but only Kem and Modiano cards have shown this distaste for my atmosphere.

So file this under strange but true, but Kem and Modiano cards do not like my basement atmosphere...who would of thunk it.

What is the best way to get them "unbowed"?

I've tried laying cards under heavy weight with limited success but generally I just move the cards out of my top 16 setups case and put them off to the side with all the other cards that didn't make my top 16.

I've had Modiano Poker club Poker width cards sitting out in the open at my desk at work for months, no bow.
They are not sprayed out everywhere, but they're not in a plastic case either. (paper case)

How wet is it down in that basement of yours?

Sounds like Modiano and KEM suck in more humidity......

I have a standard finished basement and I sleep down there often but something is in the air that Modiano and Kem cards don't like.

I have a finished basement now too in the house we just moved to.
Sounds like I shouldn't keep the poker stuff down there.....
They should all stay under my pillow, where no one can pilfer them away........

Kem cards do not like high humidity. If your basement is damp, that is the problem.

Re: Modiano and USPC Kem cards bowing...only for me?

I have only experienced bowing in my Kems, but my Modianos do not see near as much action. There is noting you can really do about it short of not using them. The oils from your hands would supply enough moisture for the cards to absorb. Cards in Las Vegas card rooms that rarely get shuffled by hand anymore will bow. You can't blame it on the humidity or poor shuffling in that situation.

Re: Modiano and USPC Kem cards bowing...only for me?

Played in a tourney at Mesquaki Casino on Wednesday and we went through two setups due to bowed cards in the first 15 minutes. Kems of course (bridge size). It was so pronounced that the Ace of Spades was bowing so bad it was visible as it was dealt. A friend of mine called the card in a guys hand after the dealer had tried to continue even after the problem was noticed. Table agreed they were unplayable.

They said that they stored them upside down in cases and still bowing. Granted those cards get a lot of play. A new setup from the wrapper solved the problems. Needless to say the dealer was bad mouthing Kem something fierce. USPC better get it together soon...

Remember these are made with cellulose (acetate) which is actually wood and will absorb and obviously react to humidity. They're not pure plastic just like clay chips aren't pure clay.
