Cut cards in Hold Em?

Is there a purpose for cut cards in Hold Em, and if so, how should they be used?

Place the cut card under the deck after the cut.
This prevents exposing the bottom card, as well as preventing nefarious dealers from dealing from the bottom of the deck.

We have person to right of dealer cut the deck.

Then it is used to prevent the dealer from flashing the bottom of the deck.

Not sure if that's what you're looking for

The way we do it is the dealer places the deck on the table in front of the guy to his right. Next to the cards, he places the cut card. The cutter takes half the stack of cards and places them on the cut card. Then the dealer puts the bottom half on top and presto! The cut deck is ready to go with the cut card in place.

And all this time I thought they were for use with my six-deck Texas Hold'em dealing shoe.

d_p has the proper method working and R-Deckard has an interesting new idea - six deck holdem (Let's see, I have pocket aces suited, what should I do?)

In addition to what's been said already:

I use the cut card to scoop up the cards at the end of each hand, whether it's the muck or the entire deck after a good "washing".

After scooping up all the cards the cut card stays on the bottom to block the view of any players sitting opposite me as I align all the cards for the next shuffle. That way neither I nor any other players get a glimpse of what cards were on the bottom before the shuffle. Or even more important, no one can get an accidental glimpse of anything that was in the muck.

I just do it like I see the casino dealers do it.

I actually didn't make this up out of thin air. I've been asked by a few newbies "how many decks do you play Hold'em with?". And Saturday night we had a noob (probably a blackjack player) who really thought there were multiple decks and therefore thought that more than four aces were in play. Amazing.
