modiano vs dal negro

I will probably get in on the copag group buy, but I am also thinking about getting another type of plastic setup, and I am trying to choose between these two brands...

if you have played with both Modiano and Dal Negros please post your preference and why. Also include what kind of deck you have (size, index, design).

I generally prefer bridge, regular index, but am considering poker size to try out the 4 pips.

thanks for the info...

Well, since I have only played with Dal Negros, I didn't vote. I can say however that the Dal Negros are top notch, and I infinitely prefer them to my Kems. I have the freedoms. Poker size with regular index. After a week of daily use, they completely retain their original shape, they shuffle nicely and slide on my table with ease. Initially I had the problem where the top card wants to slide off of the deck, but after a week that isn't really happening anymore.

I've also heard great things about the Modianos and have been told they are very similar to DNs. One day I'll probably give them a try as well. Honestly though I don't feel the need to get any more cards anytime too soon because these DNs are fantastic! You probably can't go wrong either way, but I know you can't go wrong with the DNs.

Thanks for the info,

additionally if you have any experience with either kind like ThorCavalier had with the DN's, please post...

even if you haven't tried both some info is better than none.

THANKS

This is really a tuff call...the cards are almost carbon copies of one another.

For reference, my experience is with the Dal Negro Freedom's (security ink) and the Modiano Bike Trophy's (4 PIP). Both decks are favorites of mine. I give The Dal Negro's a very slight edge when it comes to texture and I give the Modiano's the edge on looks and durability. To be honest you could close your eyes and pick either deck and you will have made a great choice.

Tuff call, but I voted Modiano.

Also, can anyone confirm if the Dal Negro Torcello's (4 PIP) have the exact same feel/texture as the Freedom's? If the answer is yes, I need to check them out too.

I have both Dal Negro (DN) and Modiano (M) cards in bridge, regular index. They're both great cards, but if I have to choose, I prefer DN over M:
  • M are a bit thicker and stiffer than DN, and have more rounded corners than DN. This makes it harder to do a good "casino-style" corner riffle shuffle. But because they are thicker, M seem to be more well-behaved when "pitched" during dealing.
  • The quality of printing is much better on DN than on M. DN is clear, sharp and precise. M is a bit fuzzier on the edges of the symbols and indices, and face art is a bit more "blobby". M colors are darker and more vivid than DN, though.

Oh, the designs I have are
DN: Carpet, Grand Slam
M: Classic (also have Bike Trophy Poker-size but haven't played with them).

I'm agreeing with ky70. It's a tough call. My DN Royals (wide, borderless) are less slick, and the Modiano Bike Trophy (wide, bordered) are a bit thicker and stiffer. Both aspects are of interest to me, and it's hard to choose a favorite between the two.

...So I didn't vote.

But I will say this- as long as I have either of these decks to play with, my Kem's and Copags will collect dust in their respective boxes. Take that with however many grains of salt as you wish.

modiano bike trophy's 2 deck setup for 14.95 with free shipping.....they also have other types of modiano and copag.

I went ahead and ordered a setup of modiano's with the 4 pips. they are poker sized and i prefer bridge, but i love the look of the 4 pips. It really makes the card look balanced and definitely distinguishes it from the paper cards that i normally play with.

ill let you all know if like them when they come in.

thanks for the help.

even though others on the site have commented on them, I figured I would give my take on my Modiano Bike Trophy's that came in the mail yesterday.

LOOKS/ DESIGN: I really like the design on the back with the small bikes on the edges and the big wheels in the center. It is one of those designs where from a distance all you see are the shapes and patterns, and it isn't until you look closely that you see all of detail. Dark black and bright red colors stand out, and very nice A of spades.

The 4-pips also are a big plus to me. First they are different and new to me (have not played with 4 pips in the past) and I really like a change of pace. Secondly they really bring a balance to the card, but without making it busy. Flipping up the corners of your AKs or QQ just has a little more pizazz with the pips on each corner. They are poker size, and I typically prefer bridge but the 4 pips make the wider cards work.

FEEL: There are two categories here and I'll address them separately. First in terms of card thickness, these cards are definitely thicker than the Copags (which I liked) that I have played with in the past. They still are very flexible and easy to shuffle, but not quite as flimsy/ bendable as the Copags were when new. This may change over time, but right now I would say they have more substantial feel in hand than Copag, and I like that.

Second is the texture. The cards have a light texture to them which makes them slightly easier to hold in your hand. For the most part it doesn't have any effect on the shuffling or dealing, but I think it does make the cards a little less slick. Despite this the top card will still slide off of the deck on occasion if it is set on the table. Copags also seem to have this problem and I have heard that Gemaco do as well. I like the texture.

DURABILITY: Obviously I won't be able to make any serious judgment until about Christmas time after these have seen a lot of action. My buddies copag's that we played with for about 4 months for about 3-4 nights per week were showing a little wear by the end. For the most part they held up very well though, and only a few faces seemed a little faded. The Modianos seem as though they will hold up well, but as I said only time will tell.

NEGATIVES: I am sure it is clear that I really like these cards, but there is one drawback. They come in relatively flimsy cardboard boxes which are not going to offer the same protection of a nice plastic box. I am in the market right now for one, but CaraGails (where I ordered them) did not have any boxes at the time. If you are going to travel with these cards or think they will be roughed up its probably worth investing a couple bucks in a plastic box.

FINAL RECOMMENDATION: for 15 bucks including shipping (www.caragails.com through the end of August) this setup of Bike Trophy's is a great deal. They are great cards with a good look and great feel. All of my friends will be coming back in town for the start of school in a week so I am excited to show off the new cards (and chips for which I am almost done labeling ). If you have 15 bucks to blow and you like plastic cards you should definitely give them a try...I don't think you will be dissappointed.

thanks for all that helped on the thread
