I've got the same problem with my velveteen and it just doesn't clean very well. I'd suggest replacing it with speed cloth, which is what I'll be doing over the summer.
Drinks are fine, but not on my tables. I place a few folding snack tables around the room; a flat surface is within reach of each player. Nearly everybody drinks soda or water (bottles only).
I have no idea if this would work on your table or not but I thought I would suggest a few things. The first, I would see if you can find some fabric that matches yours to test on before using cleaners on your table. I would check with a dry cleaners or even a steam cleaner to see if they have any suggestions. I do know that you can rent small steam cleaners at some hardware stores ( home depo/Lowes) or rental stores. My mom did payroll for a dry cleaner that helped her out by using a solvent on a silk throw that removed a stain completely without any damage to the fabric. I also know of an all natural soap called Dr. Bonners, it comes in a few different types that you add water to so you could dilute it to fit your needs. This stuff Is used for a million different things and is amazing. I use the peppermint version to shower with and it is amazing stuff, Quite invigorating, just perfect to wake ya up in the morning. You can usually find it at natural food stores or health food stores. very clean and of great quality. Its kind of fun to read the label on the bottle. It is covered with a list of uses in small print, and some will amaze you. I highly recommend it to anyone. I hope this helps in some way.
I don't know if it will work on velveteen, but Spray-N-Wash Dual Action cleaner and the battery operated Tide Stain Scrubber brush can clean just about anything, clothes, carpet, upholstery, sneakers. Killer combo.
