Casino chip sets or home Paulsons

Okaay........

Now that TRK has gone the way of the dodo, my discretionary income no longer has a target.

So the question is:
I'm now focusing on Paulsons for a home set. (350+/-)
Poking around for used casino chips around $1, I've seen
1. the Ambassador Plaza chips at NevadaJacks.
2. the St. Jo's at the chiproom.com

Then there's
3. Pharaohs
4. JB Casino de Isthmus
5. National Poker series
6. Top hat & Cane series

(the $1 price has removed PNY's and Vineyards. Then there's always casino 'shopping' but I don't think I'm going to a casino anytime soon)

What do people think of these options?

Re: Casino chip sets or home Paulsons

Get some samples of casino Paulsons and home Paulsons. If you don't find you have a preference for either just go with the best deal.

I have a set of St. Jo's and those are sweet with some cleaning.

Good Luck,

C & C

Re: Casino chip sets or home Paulsons

I vote for The Samurai Palace Blue Chips - but they aren't Paulsons (not sure why you HAVE to get Paulsons). The more I play with the Samurai's the better they get - they start to get "buttery" (best I can come up with) after a bunch of use.

I don't know why I HAVE to get Paulsons.
Just defaulted over from TRK's.

Preconceptions, I guess

Re: Casino chip sets or home Paulsons

The Plaza are the chips I would have chose. Especialy now when they goes for $1 a pice.
This choice are based on looks mostely (mold edgespots inlay) and I think that the real casino chips some times are just better then the home ones.

Re: Casino chip sets or home Paulsons

Of the chips listed heres what I think:

St Jos are the best deal, and are great looking chips IF you put the time in cleaning them. Plus they have shaped inlays.

Let's be honest, if the cog inlay was a man, he would be king.

For me, it was easy. At night I would clean a rack while watching TV. Eventually they all got done. It wasn't a quick process, but with the price I paid, there is no better deal. Cleaned up and done, these chips rock.

Fresh out of the box though, I would say the Plaza's at $1/ea. These are used though, and you're still going to have to clean them (unless you like the grime on casino used chips....freak )

I love the THC mold. I really DONT love the Paulson home mold, so there is no choice for me. Of the home chips, I would go with NPS's because of the different edge spots.

Re: Casino chip sets or home Paulsons

I ended up going with the home Paulsons because the "Paulson Chips" mold doesn't really bother me that much, although it did initially - so I can see how that is a big issue to people. Generally speaking, I prefer the grand inlay to standard inlay.

I know that some (many?) Paulson collectors argue that the plain TH&C mold is the only true Paulson and that the new home sets are a different beast entirely. I posted a question, and didn't see any responses when I last checked, inquiring about the condition of the used Ambassador Plaza chips available from NJ. At 1.00 per chip, those seem like a great option for getting casino chips as long as they are not completely torn up.

Re: Casino chip sets or home Paulsons

I have a bunch of Ambassador Plaza chips. I started with 5/25/100/500, but the 5's were too worn down for me so I sold them on eBay - and I'm not sure if the 500's are still available. The 25's and 100's that I have are in good shape, still plenty of crosshatching and the chips stand on edge. Luckily I bought a bunch of 500's before they stopped being listed on the NJ site. Great chips.
