Re: Poker Academy Pro

I was a beta tester for the latest version - and use the "basic" version.

Somewhat like Turbo holdem - but less configurable. A decent all around simulation (and I believe that the final PRO version has more configuration options).

The best part of the "pro" version is the AI. They have learning bots for both NL and limit that learn and adjust to your playing style. The limit one has been around for a while - and is a great tool. Most real "pros" have trouble with it (breaking even is winning against this thing). No real opinion on the NL one, as I have not played against it enough to form an opinion as of yet.

pokersource has this as one of their bonus offers, definately one of their better ones as it is like $130 new

Re: Poker Academy Pro

Great tool. They have both standard and pro versions. Also includes online play. Lots of statistcal data to analyze holes in your game. Definitely cool ai that learns as it plays against you. If you bluff a lot it will soon call or reraise your bets. Have only used it for NL have heard great things re: limit bots though. They have a demo download and also offer great support. Highly recommended. Check it out.

Re: Poker Academy Pro

Yeah I just got it via PSO as a bonus and it seems pretty good. The built in advisor is a bit odd though, it recommends calling/folding in situations where you'd typically do just the opposite. I've hidden it until I hit a situation where I'm not certain, then I take a look to see what its recommending.

I'm just wondering if there is a way I should be using it to improve my tournament play. E.g., play x number of tourneys or hours at $5 level, then go to $10, $20, etc. assuming the bots adjust their play according to the buy-in amount. Play a small # of players in a MTT and steadily increase the # of players, keeping the buy-in the same. Some combo of both?

Re: Poker Academy Pro

The advisor is a bit strange. I don't use it either. But I think you can tweak it's settings to advise you based on certain playing styles. Check out their forum. Lots of q's about program answered there.

As far as how to use. Choose a tourney set-up that most matches those that you play. You can use random opponents or set them based on their playing styles. I don't think the buy-in makes a difference but i could be wrong.
Other players have also created bots that you can download that play a lot like those you may find in low level online games ie moving all-in, chasing draws to the river, etc. Again best to check the forum to make the best use of the program.

Re: Poker Academy Pro

THe bots, I believe, are better cash game players than tournament. Also, version 2.0, which I'll get as soon as I work off the hands, is supposed to be a lot better than the first, which is what I'm currently using.

It's also good if you dont have pokertracker and the like, since itll track your win rate.

Re: Poker Academy Pro

As far as poker software goes, I believe PA is the best available.

I have a bot that plays a passable limit game.
