Super Diamond Poker Chips (9g) Review

Manufacturer: Unknown. Quite possibly every foreign injection moulding factory.
Retailer(s): 5star, ebay, Poker Chip mart, many many others.
Average Price: 8-10 cents but can be had for 6 cents
Material: Some sort of plastic compound (possibly Nylon)

Undoubtably the cheapest chip beyond the Hoyle or Bicycle red, white and blue stackables. Arguably the best chip for the money.

Price
The cheapest you can get in a "real" chip. You can't go wrong with $3 for a roll of 50.
Feel
These are not clay BUT they feel softer and more like clay than a "dice" chip. I haven't felt every chip out there but these feel the most clay-like of the non clay chips out there. Each chip weighs 8.3 - 8.7 grams. A stack of 10 almost always weighs in at 84g. Chips are textured so they are not terribly slick but they are extremely hard and edges are kind of sharp. During an experiment I soaked these in water for several hours, this significantly softened the chip and changed the feel to more "rubbery". The effects of the water lasted 2-3 days.
Stacking
You can easily play with stacks of 20 and if your table is not too mushy 50 is not out of reach. If you are just looking to stack chips for fun I have easily gotten 200 high on a hard surface.
Sound
Not clay, but not too far off. Super Diamonds do not have the metalic sound of "Dice" or other metal slug insert chips. I also think they sound a bit better than ceramics. As previously mentioned, I discovered in an experiment that if you soak these chips in water for a few hours or stick them in the dishwasher they have a slightly more clay like sound (more clack than clank). This softening effect lasted 2-3 days before the chips returned to normal.
Looks
These have no style whatsoever, are very plain, and can be considered boring. What do you expect for $0.06 each? Colors vary slightly between batches but are consistant within a batch. This variation is most notable with the green chip. The injection "nipple" is visible on most chips. It is a much lighter color and is located on the face of the chip in the inner recessed ring. Below is a list of the colors in reverse order of obviousness of the injection site (the least obvious is first).

White - Black - Red - Blue - Red - Green - Purple
Security/Originality
These may not be the worst for commonality, but are probably second after "Dice" chips. I back up my guess by saying these are slightly less popular because "Dice" chips look so much "cooler" due to the design and edgespots. In their most basic form, these chips have no security whatsoever. These can be hotstamped but that would in effect double the cost, which defeats the point of being cheap. I have not experimented with labels on these but have heard through the grapevine that you can label super diamonds. The center is not recessed and is 31/32" in diameter. There is a recessed ring around the label area and 1" labels would need to be carefully centered and folded over this recess. I have also experimented with "custom edgespots" using Sharpie markers and model paint. The marker experiment came out remarkably well with no rub off once the ink dried. The paint was not so good as it chipped off quite easily.
Durability
These chips are almost impossible to break. They withstand heat better than any other chip tested during Ten's Bake Off, and if they get dirty you can just throw them in your dishwasher with NO worries. This will temporarily soften the chips and make them more suseptable to damage. The plastic or nylon material is fairly soft and can be easily scratched with a fingernail. The scratched material leaves a lighter color mark in the damged area.
Reviewers Comments
Bottom line: Perfect for tournaments and homegames. If you want chips to show off to your buddies or for cash games, get a better chip. For outfitting a large tournament, there is no better deal out there. I have actually used these chips in a tiny casino multi table tourney in Nevada.

Super Diamond Poker Chips (9g)
Purchased from: ebay auction
Price Paid: 2.2¢ each

I have played with a LOT of cheap chips. These are one of the better "cheapies" I have encountered. I plan on labeling these chips to use for home cash games, but the price makes them ideal for tournament use.

Pros:
  • Weight: 9 g
  • Feel: Pretty good feel for composites. Softer than ABS and they have a texture on them so they aren't as slippery. Consistency of size is very good.
  • Stacking: Better than I expected. That slight texture enables them to stick together pretty well and stack 30 high (more than I can reach over on the table).
  • Mold: You can actually feel the diamonds that are molded into the chip.
  • Lots of colors available and can be found at MANY vendors.
  • Price, Price, Price!
  • Sound: No metal insert = no metal CLANK. Sort of plasticy, but not real bad.
Cons:
  • No edge spots or stripes to speak of, solid colors only.
  • Zero security (which is why I'm adding custom labels).
  • Small injection pimple, but not as bad as Faux Clays!
