Re: LABEL SOFTWARE

I use Sure Thing Office Labeler to print the labels, but I usually do the label design in Photoshop CS and save them as layered, uncompressed TIFF files at 600DPI.

What kind of Printer would work the best? Any suggestions would help.

That's kind of an open ended question.
For photographic quality images, inkjet printers tend to render a better image than a laser, but the ink may not prove to be as durable on a chip label than one printed on a laser printer. Additionally, since most of the inkjet inks are water soluable, they're vulnerable to water damage.

Overall, you would most likely get the best results in terms of durability using a laser printer on labels that are of some sort of vinyl or poly base rather than a paper label, and you're best served protecting the label with a clear acrylic coating (Krylon makes several) that is sprayed on after the label has been printed.

Given the small size of a label that is used on a chip, it's not likely that you'll be able to distinguish much difference in quality between the output from a decent quality color laser and and that from a moderately priced inkjet printer.

In terms of the quality of the ink vs. the quality of the laser, the choice is clear. Unless your friends are perfect, expect some sort of liquid to be spilled. Therefore, you've got to go Laser.

Onlinelabels (Consolidated Labels) has a poly label that is formulated for inkjet ink that is supposed to make the label weatherproof. And if the label is coated with an acrylic, the water resistance may be acceptable, but I can't really attest to it since I haven't tried it, nor do I have an inkjet printer.
