alright, the drill press idea is still the best I can imagine so far, but I had another thought. would it be feasible to simply press the inlay area flat with a 7/8", solid ingot hotstamp dye?

yeah, I was thinking of prepping the surface to apply a label. instead of removing material perhaps this would just squash it flat.
