Re: Labeling PaulSons: Cool idea or blasphemy?

I'd sit tight another few weeks- we installed the new epson printers-- and they make ONE type of new vinyl material with permanent adhesive backing which were gonna play around with- this vinyl is more in the plastic family and is a bit more rigid then the reg vinyl we now use- I'm not sure how the inks will hold up as the vinyl printers use whats called a scratch resistant ink and the Epsons use a pigment ink- but the material we like alot better and the print quality is better- I think a spray lam will be needed- weve used clear lacquer in the past with excellent results-

also there seems to be alot less shrinkage with this new stuff-- the key to eliminating any shrinkage weve found is to let the material dry for at least 2-3 days-- the solvents HAVE to outgass fully otherwise weve seen shrinkage occur as have others who make labels

Weve found paulsons, BCC and ASM chips cannot accept lamination and vinyl- the recessed area just isnt deep enough

For the paulsons- a precise cut is crucial for a good looking job--but theyre tedious to do using thin vinyl becaause the vinyl doesnt hold its shape making application a real pain- though others have done it succesfully.

I'll keep you posted on how the new stuff works out- were gonna do some paulsons in a few weeks for someone and we can use these as a test

Thank you for that helpful Info Joe!
I don´t have any needs to hurry, except my own patience
Regarding the Labels, i have sample of Michael Ody´s custom Chips here. I peeled one label off and it seems like the thickness will work. I cant test it really good bc they are bigger in diameter than the recessed area on my PCR´s.
Getting the laminated, textured labels like on those samplechips or some that are equal in feel and durability, will be the only way i want to go if i label the chips. I wouldn´t put the vinyl labels without lamination on them. IMHO they look like stickers and that is exactly what i dont want the labels to look like.

If you have some news for me, just let me know. But there is no need to hurry.

Re: Labeling PaulSons: Cool idea or blasphemy?

Did you consider getting labels from Hogwild? I have read some good posts reguarding his work. I am considering getting a set of PCR NCVs and putting on custom labels.

Re: Labeling PaulSons: Cool idea or blasphemy?

His labels are vinyl. Not sure if vinyl is better/worse than laminated

This is his web site.

Search for this thread to see some of his work.
Hog Wilds Personal Progens

This is an example from his web site of labeled Paulsons
Vinyl Labels on Chip

I hope this helps

Well I think, especially since these are stock chips, it's a great idea.
But you need to sand them first.
Vinyl would definately work. They feel like the smooth paulson inlays.

No Vinyls without lamination for me!
Definitely they must be laminated labels as similar as possible to the ones Joe uses for his PI-Clays.
I have samples of non-laminated labels (including the ones on your Faux´s, sorry, no offense intended) and imo they feel like cheap stickers, also the printing is not protected and will probably shuffle away quite easy.
I dont want to mess those chips up, i want to personalize them with trying to keep their quality as good as possible.

Might be the best way for you to get custom Paulson's after all....Seeing as I don't like those hotstamps, I'd say go for it.

Re: Labeling PaulSons: Cool idea or blasphemy?

Exactly my thoughts...I've got ASM and T-mold customs and really enjoy the personal touch...I've always wanted custom paulsons because of the cool spots and feel of the chips but am aware that there is no chance I will be able to get them in my lifetime...I enjoy designing inlays and to me, it's just another fun chip project. I hope to have something to show in a few weeks and those that wish to can flame away. But it won't diminish my enjoyment of the design process and playing with the final product.
