I quick yet important thought on vinyl labels...

See my post below where I labelled a bunch of Paulsons. Well, they came out great, but I'm a textured label guy. So... I am in the process of re-labelling them.

There is a product called Krylon Matte Finish. It's a protective spray. I know Hogwild says his labels don't need it, but it gives the labels a wonderful, textured feel that matches perfectly to a nice set of clay Paulsons.

Krylon Matte. Go forth and spray!

He's right when he says they don't need the spray. I sold my labelled Nexgens about 6 months ago to a member at a different forum. He sent me pictures of them and they've held up perfectly after weekly use in a 10 player tournament.

I assume you've already tried the spray on a few labels? What effects does it have on the labels themselves other than giving them the texture you're going after?

I'm really looking forward to seeing pictures. I think this is the first time I've heard of spraying vinyl labels.

WAY, WAY back in the day, I had a labeled set of nexgens and used the Krylon Matte Spray on them prior to applying and they certainly give a nice rough texture.

Were these paper or vinyl?

IMO, spraying the paper labels with that Krylon stuff is a MUST. Not so much with the vinyl.

Don't know about vinyl but it slightly darkens text and graphics on paper and, IMO, makes them look better. I think it's a must on paper labels.

I have sprayed the paper and the vinyl. Paper does make it a tad darker and adds texture. Vinyl - it just removes the glossy aspect and adds texture. The image is entirely intact. I have to say, the feel is sooo much better to a textured finish guy...

Good thread. Thanks for the advice. There are many options for protective coatings and sprays, and from what little exposure I've had to them, the Krylon Matte Finish is a good one.

(In the boardgame world, my other hobby, people who self-publish games are always using protective coatings and sprays on their cards and tiles. I sometimes print some print-n-play games also, and if you print some cards on cardstock and cut them out, spray coatings are vital to make the cards useable and durable)
