Take a look at my Nexgen Bee labels

Hello folks,

My first post here. Just wanted to say that this forum has been enormously helpful in my obsessive quest for custom chips. Thanks to everybody for their info and input.

I host a monthly 2-table tourney and am trying to make an 800-chip set with Lucky Bees. Looking for some honest feedback on these. I live on Bona Street in Oakland, and the oak (of course) is the city's symbol. This is a seriously lo-fi version of a mock-up, and the tree will be rendered much more beautifully by my friend the graphic artist.

The oaks will eventually look like this one:

But here's what I came up with on Microsoft Word. I stole the template idea from BPCL, where I will be ordering the labels from. I'm going with BPCL because I want the colors to match as closely as possible, and they seem to do well in this regard.

I went with the non-standard blue for the $25 chip because I love the color-matching capability of the Bees, and the grey and white highlights on the green chip didn't prove interesting enough. I might have actually gone a little overboard with all the color matching, but that's why I'm throwing it out to the forum. What do you REALLY think? Be honest - I can take it.

Re: Take a look at my Nexgen Bee labels

Welcome aboard.

Very nice considering you used Word. A little polish and the will be a great design. The only thing I dislike it the position of the denoms.

Check the GENERATION NEX Members Photos thread under Poker Chips General if you haven't already.

Re: Take a look at my Nexgen Bee labels

Oh, believe me, I've been all over the Generation Nex posts....
(stealing ideas)

Thanks for the input. Any suggestions on a different denom placement/orientation? I've messed with 1000 different possibilities already (yeah, I've been a little obsessed), but I'm always looking for fresh ideas.

I thought they would balance out the blank space under the branches of the tree, but I could be mistaken. Wouldn't be the first time...

Cool. Don't worry, your in good company regarding obession and poker chips. Logically thinking maybe drop the BFP and put the denoms there. Remember the labels are only one inch so busy means everything is smaller and smaller means unreadable. Would you mind if I had a play with the design?

I agree, I would drop the BFP, especially since you have all the words for the acronym already above the tree, and put the dem's there.

I really like your design a lot otherwise though, very nice!

Something like this:

Just the base design, no colour matching etc but I can add the colour matching and the fonts if you let me know the names of the fonts you used.

Re: Take a look at my Nexgen Bee labels

Drop the "BFP?" Do you have any idea how long it took to find the font that matched the oak tree perfectly?

Thanks for the compliments, folks. Lord knows I spent enough time on these...

In the meantime, I came up with this version.

Eliminated one denom, but added suit spacers, so my efforts at making it less busy may have failed. I'm not wild about the placement of the bottom banner, but it is pleasingly more asymmetrical. Any better?

I don't know - I liked the idea of creating a logo of sorts in the center, and the acronym plays a part in that. I'm aware of the perils of "over-designing" something, but I have to admit that Blake's design seems a little sparse for my taste. I'm also not a big fan of symmetry, but I have to admit that I am giving serious thought to your idea.

Blake, if you're really bored and this is something you enjoy doing, I would love to have you play with the design. The only font I really love is Mexcellent, the one that I used for the acronym. That would HAVE to be incorporated in some way. It might be a little busy for the banner, I don't know. I would like fonts with that 70s feel to match the retro look of the oak logo. You're going to send me back to the font sites again, aren't you?

Thanks again for your help.

I wouldn't say bored, I have a bit of time on my hands as use it as a form of therapy.

I found the Mexcellent font. I'll have a look and see what I can find regarding a retro style font. Check out:

Everyone will have an opinion but whatever your happy with is the way to go. The other option is to have a different but similar design on each side of the chip.
