With an inkjet, the only weatherproof option has always been a poly label which should be fine, but it's not a glossy label. The vinyl was only available for lasers and that was discontinued around Feb of this year to go to the poly. I ordered a pretty good sized quantity of the vinyls so I haven't had a need to try the laser poly labels yet, though the poly inkjet labels that I've seen seem to be decent stuff, albeit a little thinner than the vinyl.
A hundred sheet pack should be more than adequate for you to do experimentation and to get it done right, and you'll still probably have more than half left over if you're just going to print about 1000 labels.
Insofar as a protective coat, the matte may mute the photographic details a bit. I think Jason and Lynbark generally use Krylon Preserve It. I use Krylon Crystal Clear (doesn't have UV protection); it's available in matte, satin, and gloss. For photographic images, you might want to experiment with the Satin and Gloss finishes to see which you may prefer. The gloss can cause a reflective glare when used on chip labels, but it's a tradeoff if you want a glossy finish to your final product. The glossy spray will not be any more glossy than the finish on a glossy label, though it should not make it appear any more glossy. I tend to prefer the Satin Crystal Clear for photographic images on labels, about 2-3 light coats on vinyl.

I'm gonna order 100 sheets which is like 500% waste so I should be ok on stock. How many inkcarts do you think I might need? I figure 20 sheets is like 20 8x10 color photos, no?
I'll get one of the Krylon products too. Which do you think will work best on a glossy sheet? Would the glossy spray make it too glossy, or conversely would the matte spray defeat the hole look? |
