Chips: 37,262 | | | Quote one-liners that make us true junkies I frequently come across posts that include little pieces of text that make me smile at how most of us are so helplessly dedicated to the tiny intricacies of a poker chip. A collection of them might be funny.
What makes them funny is that they are NOT funny to us when written or when thought. As an outsider looking in, people probably think, "Man, those guys really have it bad."
Here's a very recent one from Knish, in response to someone asking about applying labels to poker chips: Quote: |

NextGen RPT: 25 + 25.5 + 26 + 25.5 + 26. Avg.= 25.6
And- for giggles, I even ran a 'promo' chip run-off:
Phillip/ACE: 30.5 + 30 + 30 + 31 + 30. Avg.= 30.3
Michael/HPC: 29.5 + 30 + 29 + 29.5 + 30. Avg.= 29.6
Notes:
I noticed the condition of the chip had much more latitude in the readings than the stability of the test jig. The Chipco classics I have are well broken-in from shuffling, whereas the Tourney's are virtually new. I also discovered that in order for the readings to repeat correctly, the two chips must be set concentric, not skewed- before the test.
Clays, especially the Paulson's- posed a different problem. My first trial readings were all over the dial, varying by as much as 8-10 degrees. I discovered the reason was orientation of the chips set on the plate. If the edge spots were aligned, the readings were higher. Rotating the chip so that the edgespots weren't in alignment offered consistant, though lower, results. I can only surmise from this observation that the edgespot material has a different (higher) 'stick' property.
Procedural observations:
I knew the test jig had to be level before any tests, but I was surprised how much of a diffence it made. Actually, the plate is what has to be level, and the protractor adjusted to zero degrees at this point.
The chips have to be placed on the plate each time for each test when it is level. You can't 'cheat', and lower the plate a little, reset the chips, and repeat the test. It won't repeat. It's a pain doing all that cranking, but it yields consistant results.
Haven't got to the cards, yet.

I can't believe I missed _Z_'s chip-slickness testing apparatus picture. I was blowing off that thread because it seemed too geek. Classic, classic, classic. |
