Well, either you love 'em or hate 'em, most people have a definite opinion about Bud Jones chips.
Yes, BJs are a composite plastic material. They were the first plastic injection-molded chips on the market. I don't think anybody knows the secret formula, but it's probably got some nylon or something rubbery. It's a hard chip that lasts well, though some get cracked with use.
Even though it's hard, the surface is a little bit tacky, at least to me. It's machined so the diameters are the same and the edges are beveled. Some are slightly beveled, and other designs have a more rounded edge. They usually have bright colors, good mold designs, and nice inlays.
When you stack the chips, the slight depression for the inlay causes a suction effect. The classic design BJs like Borgata (called "decal A" and with a wide rim and smallish inlay) really stick together because of this vacuum. (Other BJ designs with bigger inlays don't have as much suction, in my testing.) If you put two chips on a plain surface, when you pick up the top chip, the bottom one comes with it for a second until it falls.
The other thing about BJs is that they were the first to use a molded metal insert. They started making coin-centered chips, and eventually (20? years ago) covered the coins with more plastic and with an inlay to make their "decal" chips. The plastic is injection molded in fine patterns around a brass slug.
So yes kids, most BJs have metal centers just like the cheap Chinese 11.5 grammers. But because of the type of plastic and the molding process, they don't sound anything like the cheap chips. They sound a lot like Paulson clays. Just my opinion, your mileage may vary!
The Borgata line is a perfect example of classic BJs, in all the denominations. And the WSOP 2004 Final used BJ chips (decal B). I think they feel, stack, and play great.
