Tournament Chips

About every other month we have a big tournament. The turnout is usually between 20 and 30 people. We end up using a couple of sets (dice, suits) of poker chips to do the tournament. We make all the chips the same value because we do not have enough of one kind to use. This works out ok. I would like to get a set that could be used for these tournaments. I would probably get 3 colors of chips that would represent 1, 25 and 100. Three colors is what seems most tournaments use. Not sure if I would put denominations on them or not. I would think that 1000 total chips would be enough for even 30 players. I would break it down with 850 white or blue, 100 green and 50 black.

I was curious as to what eveyone thought about this. Do I need more deominations, different denominations, more chips? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I never run tourneys bigger than 10 people, so I cant help you there...

I can suggest a chip though (for the 40th time).

The 10 gram faux clays at 5stardeal.com are amazing for the .06 cent price tag. 1000 chips would cost you 60 dollars, which is great.

Good luck, I'm sure someone will reply with some good advice about distribution..or check out the site below.

i dont like the isea of having a chip worth 1 in a tourney. u could have 10,25,100,500 and you could be set.
your blinds could be
10/20
20/40
25/50
50/100
75/150 etc.

1 - 25 is too far of a spread

make it 5/25/100 -- or -- since you're making it from scratch you could do 25/100/500 (I like green/black/purple). If I can get a largish tournament going I'm going to use 500 chips per 10 people, like this:

green 160 @ $25
black 160 @ $100
purple 100 @ $500
yellow 80 @ $1000

This will allow me to run a rebuy tournament where the average person rebuys 3.3 times and 2/3 of the people take the addon. I can add on racks of chips (100) at 40 purple and 60 yellow to get 32 more rebuys per rack. That's a lot of cash in the kitty!

The starting stacks are $2500, 16 green/16 black/1 purple. The rebuy stacks are $2500, the add-ons are $3000. I would just give people high denom chips for rebuys and they can make change at the table.

If I get this off the ground I'll be using the "faux clay" chips from 5stardeal.

cmoses, have you seen this yet? http://www.homepokertourney.com/chips_needed.htm This site has all kinds of great info on running tourneys. I think everything you need to know is here.

Ten, we need a FAQ or something here, or a permanent link to homepokertourney's and holdempokerchip's "chips needed" pages. . . seems like there is someone asking these same kinds of questions every few days or so.

I also don't like having 1$ chips in a tournament and agree that a spread from 1-25 is to much....5-25 is much better. I also wouldn't go with so much of one kind. 850 seems a little high to me if you getting a thousand chips and only three denominations I would think that 600 is enough of one denomination and then 300 (25s) and 100 (100s)
