all the fuss about NexGens...

so i just got my samples of the river poker tour nexgens, and, honestly, i really don't see what all the fuss is about...i mean, i guess they look nice from a distance, but here is why i really don't like them all that much:

1) they are way too heavy for my taste
2) they really don't resemble clay even from a moderate distance ... clearly plastic all the way
3) many of the samples had very bad blemishes near the edge spots where the plastic was not flush with the mold
4) they are VERY slippery and fall all over the place when you move even a short stack
5) they have a very metallic sound when splashed

i guess i am just really picky about chips, but i definitely prefer even the 6 cent 5stardeal chips to the nexgens. i don't mean to be totally negative about the nexgens, they do have positive attributes as well (namely the nice colors and clay-looking edge-spots as well as the ease of custom labeling), but i really just don't get all the hype...am i the only one who feels this way?

BTW sorry if i offend any nexgen fanatics out there

I have a set of the RPT Nexgens. They are ok, I don't really like them much. They are heavy and don't feel nice at all. They sound OK, not as terrible as most plastic chips with a metal insert.

The only reason we got them was to slap some custom labels on em for an in between set of chips to use before getting something better.

But overall I dont like the way they feel/play, but do like the way they look.

Nexgens look great, especially for the price. With custom labels from jason or lynbark, they can look outstanding. That's the best thing about Nexgens. They get a solid A for looks.

Unfortunately, once you pick them up they go down IMHO. They have a decent molded shape, but are definitely hard plastic. They don't "give" at all and won't Stick & stack very high. Down to a C- for feel.

As far as weight and sound, both those are OK to me, though the sound is a little metallic for my taste. B- for sound.

Overall, Nexgens with custom labels are an excellent mid-priced set that will add some class to your table. Overall B, for the price, if customized (otherwise get something else).

As far as true feel in a less expensive chip, the Neophytes/Kingpins [corrected] have a surprisingly nice clay-like feel for the price. And the cheapest faux clay chips look very plain but feel great for peanuts.

I have 2000 Nexgens that I use for tourneys. The reason I like them is that they are cheap, and they take labels very well. They don't handle the greatest but overall good enough for me and my loser friends.

Well said and very objective. I nominate tomb1 to do a Member Review of the Nexgen RPT's.

hey ten,
i wouldn't mind doing a review or 2 myself...i realize that i was a bit harsh in my post, but i just didn't have the time at the moment to also list what i did like about them. plus, i guess that it was a let down when i got the rpt's because there was just no way that they could ever live up to the hype that i've seen around the net... anyway, i'm in the process of building quite a massive sample selection, and i could be much more objective in an actual review than i was in my post...i guess i'll get the template for the reviews and submit a few rough drafts for you when i get a few extra minutes...

Thanks for the nomination. But my quick comments are based on only having a few sample Nexgens. I'm not using a set on a regular basis, so I would yield my time to the distinguished gentleman, ma blues brotha Hunterking... or anyone else with a full set and lots more experience.

Besides, I haven't chopped up or baked any Nexgens, so what the heck do I know?!?

But I'll review another type of chip that I use regularly...

I think you meant the Neophyte/Kingpins and not the Archetypes as they are about $1 a chip compared to Neophytes at $.25

Absolutely right... nice catch. I could try to blame that on my typing, but it's really just brain leakage!
