When I get my JB Paulson's (oil or not)

Help me out. The percentages will decide what I do.

If the actual chips in bulk look anything like my samples, I don't think any oiling is necessary, and may actually do harm (remember this post?) BTW, the purpose of oiling isn't to get rid of dust (think about what would happen if you added some oil to a little pile of dust--now you've got yucky sticky dust paste). The purpose of oiling is to get some oil absorbed into the clay, which I believe reduces the surface opacity/reflectivity and makes the chip color appear darker/deeper (think about what your shirt or paper napkin looks like when you drip some oil onto it).

i have wondered the same thing. i have samples of the black $100 chip and the orange and blue edge spots are all nasty from shuffling. i assume like R Deckard said that oiling them would make "yucky sticky dust paste".
i have cleaned a couple of my samples and they look OK now.

any thoughts on "pre-cleaning" the chips to prevent the gunkification of the edge spots? i would much rather pre-clean 500 chips than have to try to scrub the crap off later.

I don't think pre-cleaning would help much. I didn't oil when I first got them. They got pretty dirty after 3 days (4-5 hrs shuffling per day). Then I washed 'em with dishwashing detergent, water, and soft toothbrush (still no oil). After 3-4 days they just about as dirty as before. Then I cleaned them again and oiled them this time. Again, same dirtiness after 3-4 days. I think I cleaned/oiled them 2-3 more times (waiting 3-4 days between cleanings) and it didn't seem to change the dirtiness factor much. Sounds like others are getting different results though.

Oiling really does make them look good though, esp the black.

Blue chip rubs off the most

I have the sample set of the new Paulson JBs. I have cleaned and cleaned and oiled. They seem to get dirty either way.

The one thing I have noticed is that the blue chip rubs off on the other chips the most. Has anybody else noticed that?

i oiled mine. i let them dry for 18 hours per side with a low breeze. when i get the new chips, i'll do it again.

i honestly don't see how people get their chips so dirty in such a small amount of time. i had a set of chips on my desk for a month. people come by and play with them, and i play with them daily. it looks 95% new.

Mine are not really dirty. As I said, it looks like the blue chip rubs off on all the others. The black chip does as well, but not as bad as the blue chip.

I don't think the Paulson's need the oiling as much as any of the BC's. Only chip I really noticed a significant difference between pre and post oiling was the $5's.

I made a similar post to this on the 2 + 2 Forum.

I’m not sure what type of oil is being discussed here, but most people use mineral oil to oil their clay chips.

I use a different oil product to enhance the look and feel of the new Paulson JB chips.

First I would like to present some observations I have made about the untreated clay chips. I have found that the JB samples I have do get dirty very quickly, but the dirt is not coming from your hands as long as your hands are fairly clean. The dirt is coming from the darker chips and edge spots, especially that wonderful black chip. You can demonstrate this by taking a clean orange chip and a clean black chip and just rub them together while applying a little force. You’ll see that the dirt on the orange chip is actually material that has rubbed off of the darker chip. This dirtying effect will of course be much less once the chips are stacked and shuffled with chips of the same color. The untreated chips will still get dirty because they will occasionally contact darker colored chips (splashing into the pot etc.), but at a much slower rate.

The product that I use to treat my clay chips is called spoon oil. It is a product that was developed to preserve and protect wooden spoons, utensils and butcher blocks, which is what I used it for in the past. It is a mixture of primarily mineral oil and bees wax. The consistency is a little thicker that mineral oil by it’s self. A little like hand lotion. A 4oz bottle of it will treat about 1,000 chips. It is more expensive that the mineral oil, but it has some advantages over the plain mineral oil. First is seems to last longer than mineral oil. I’ve never had to retreat any chips that I have treated once at least in the last 5 years. Second it makes the chips look and feel better. The colors seem deeper and there is a slight luster to the chips and the surface of the chips become even less slick. I even have to say it even makes them sound a little better by slightly lowering the pitch they make when they click together. Third, it prevents the chips from getting dirty. Even with almost constant shuffling of my two sets of Paulson JB samples and carrying them around in my pockets for the past month, they show no signs of becoming “dirty”. Last but not least is that is makes the chips wear much slower. This is probably why they don’t get dirty.

If anyone is as OSD as I am about my clay chips you can find spoon oil online at Wood ‘N Wares http://www.woodnwares.bigstep.com/ca...l?UCIDs=694703
