My chip junki-ness has me in trouble with the wife

I couldn't resist, and bought 900 Desert Sands over the weekend.

I knew i shouldn't; my wife thinks the 600 i've got budgeted for the Pharaoh's is way too much already, and she's going to be, let's say, very upset with me about these.

Over at 2+2, Smoore gave me some rationalization for this purchase. He said i could make a profit of the Sands on Ebay almost immediately, and the Pharaoh's would clearly be worth more than they cost in a heartbeat.

the thing is; i'm not interested in reselling them. i bought the sands intending them to be my cash game set forever. and i intend the pharaoh's to be my tourny set forever.

none of this will help me with the wife. she's no harpy, in fact she's quite understanding. but in the end, i'm spending 1k on chips this year, and it's hard for her to relate. we're not rich, and 1k is not small potatoes.

i do have a question, btw. i need some talking points. i haven't told her i made this purchase, but i will need to in the very near future.

i'll start:
1) these things don't need to be replaced or upgraded ever. they're high end chips that will last forever.
2) security: in the cash game especially, dice aren't the best idea. we need some chips that are more secure.

help me out, fellas.

3) It's my money dear. I do whatever I please to with it.

Well I don't know about you. But if I'd spend 1 grand on chips, even tho my girlfriend would think of me as a total retard (she's not in fond of my passion for poker in the first place), she'd respect my decision anyhow.

Well of course they're high-end chips that will last forever... but come on, do you honestly believe you'll have them forever? Of course not... the next awesome chip that comes out will have you ordering yet another set. At least until you get bored of poker. It's the same way with any hobby. People do the same thing with golf, etc, etc.

And I have bad news for you about the Desert Sands... my set is on eBay, and it doesn't look like I'm going to get even close to what I paid for them.

my wife's valid response: the difference is, ks's girlfriend is his girlfriend. i'm your wife. we're married, and the money is ours, not yours. so making a purchase like this without consulting me is pretty low, dude.

i don't want to get into an argument about marriage. but i also can't just say deal with it, wifey.

you've already got a 200 dollar bid, and we know the real bidding doesn't happen until the last 10 minutes. what do you need to break even, 300?

besides the point, but that breakdown is kind of retarded.

thanks for being positive, though.

Just fudge the price. My 900 "Suits" only cost me $120.

jojobinks I have 2 kids under 5 so the new avatar cracks me up. I have seen far too much Jo Jo's Circus....

My approach

I am sort of in the same boat as you are. Fortunately, I can easilly justify my purchases by showing my wife that I'm taking the money to pay for chips/etc from my poker bankroll. I started playing online in June last year and with the help of one good MTT win and one fourth place finish, my bankroll is around $5k. I am currently working on a custom set of Chipcos. Things like cards I take out of my monthly "blow money" budget (the amount of money each month you can spend on anything you please - my budget provides my wife and I around $100/month for this). I could go on but I think you get the idea. If your play is +EV, there should be money available to you to "invest" in whatever you wish. My wife was totally satisfied with my explanation of how I was planning to pay for my upcoming purchases for about $2k on chips.

Hope that helps.

Tell her you don't want to look like a punk when your poker buddies come over to play. This is the point I'll be trying to sell when I bring up the Sands deal.

Something like that. A bunch of people e-mailed me about ending the auction and offered me prices of like $220... that's not looking good. Nothing I can do about the breakdown. I don't have ten thousand dollars to spend on poker chips so I have to combine my cash game and tournament set into one. NJ started the buy two get one free right after I bought mine, so I really got boned in the ass on that one. Oh well.

Your buddies think you're a punk if you have cheap chips? The people I play with look at me like I'm a f*cking moron for spending money on this crap. They'd probably have more respect with me if I just had dice or suited chips.
