History of Mixed sets?

Sorry if this is ancient news but I'm curious as to how/why mixed sets came about in this hobby? like... who just decided that mixing sets was a good idea?

For those of you who have used both cohesive sets and mixed sets - how do you feel about using them? Do you prefer the ability to mix your favorite chips from different casinos or do you prefer a cohesive set?

Again, sorry if this has been said - I searched thoroughly and found mostly just examples of cool mixed sets.

thanks,

Justin

Re: History of Mixed sets?

As I recall they came about because a particular denom was unavailable or unattainable due to price/rarity. E.g., the $500 & $1000 PNYs, Aztars/Twains above $100, etc.

Re: History of Mixed sets?

I put together a mixed Paulson cash set because I could be so much more selective with things like chip color, edge spots, inlay design, casino location, etc. rather than having a set from the same casino. With my set (a picture below with more pictures coming when I get time some day) I wanted chips from various areas of the country (Vegas, New Orleans/Louisiana, California and something locally). I wanted a variety of inlay designs rather than basically the same inlay on all the chips.
Plus, it was fun (sometimes frustrating) searching ebay and this site trying to find the right matches for my mixed set.
I used to have a Crystal Park set, I still have a Players Casino set.....but I always use my mixed set for home games. I didn't buy 'em to just let 'em sit in the closet!

Pretty much the same reasons as Doug for me. Plus it's hard to get a complete set from one casino. hey Doug, how about them new pics for your mixed set, pretty please

For me, mixed sets allow you to create very colorful sets. Plus real casino mixed sets are fun to mix & match.

Re: History of Mixed sets?

I like my sets to be from the same casino, but the exception to this is $0.25 chips. I also have to say that mixed sets look awesome if done right, and there's a lot of good ones out there. At some point I might consider an actual mixed set, but for now it's just the quarters that don't match

Re: History of Mixed sets?

Mixed sets are great because it can be very hard to fill in a certain denom from a particular set. Mixed sets allow you to maintain a relatively high amount of continuity (mold, inlay size, etc.) if you want to and still compile a playable set. I think we can say it would be hard to put together a playable set of live California Hotel chips, since the $5 chips cost $5 apiece and the $25 chips cost $25 apiece at the cage. But you can create a nice set using, say, $1 California Hotel, $5 Treasure, and $25 Double Down Saloon chips and they all have the same mold and inlay size.

Re: History of Mixed sets?

There're good and not so good mixed sets - it's all subjective.

For me, there needs to be something bringing it together. Most obviously would be a common mold (which brings common inlay size).

The other thing would be if the chips are same mold but different casinos or fantasy sets, they all should be different. Not 2 from 1, and then 3 others.
