When do chips become unplayable?

We've all been to casinos sometimes where the chips seem like they've been in play for 10 years. Anyway, I have a two part question.

When do casinos generally rotate chip sets out because they're considered unplayable?

When would you personally retire a set you've used extensively because you find it unplayable?

thanks

For casinos, the condition ranges so much, I can't really answer.

Personally, I can't imagine a set I own ever being retired due to wear. They just don't get used enough (weekly for 6-10 hours). After a year or two they might need to be cleaned, but thats all.

Re: When do chips become unplayable?

Casino practices are all over the place. I've been in a few where I swear the chips came over on the Mayflower! The more successful properties seem to be concerned about their image and don't keep the ratty chips in play.

As far as my personal collection, I doubt that I'll outlive my chips, and I might just take them with me.

I was at a local casino playing that used paulsons. The were so dirty that they stuck together and were hard to bet with and shuffle. I would change those out. Yuk

Really? Do you throw out your clothes when they get a little dirty?

Re: When do chips become unplayable?

Thanks for the responses - I'm still curious - is there a point at which chips become unusable, like failure to stack etc. or can you pretty much just clean them and use them in some capacity?
