Need a second set of chips

Hi ChipTalk, this is my first post but I have been lurking for about 2 weeks ago. I also posted this same question on HPT but I am not sure how big the overlap between the forums is. Any way here goes:

I bought this set of Chips direct from Paul-Son a few years ago (maybe 7 – I forget) as you can see, these are Paul-Son Top Hat and Cane Solid Hotstamps in Red, Green, Charcoal and “Blurple” with my initials.

After a fair number of games and tourneys over the years, these chips are as nice as they day I bought them. I absolutely love them. The set numbers 650 and as I went a tried to order another 350 to fill it out to an even thousand this past month I discovered that Paul-Son does not sell these to home users anymore. Hell, they are not even Paul-Son anymore. I also discovered that there appear to be some nice alternatives out there. I also found this site (and a very cool site it is too.)

So this leads me to my questions: I am looking to get a second set to complement these chips. I had a home game last weekend that was a dealer’s choice cash game followed by a NLHE tourney. Using the exact same chips for the game and then the tourney caused some minor confusion and I would like to get a different set of solid hotstamps to alleviate this (probably in a different color scheme). Since the Paul-Son set is top of the line I do not want to buy anything that pales in comparison.

After reading this forum and HPT it seems as if the ASM or BCC solid hotstamps will be best for this second set. I have already contacted ASM, BCC and Holdem Poker Chips for samples of their solid hotstamp offerings. I also like the Cigar and Snifter mold but that does not seem to be available in solid or hotstamped.

So – any opinions? ASM, BCC, others and which mold and colors (and are there any other options?) I am only interested in solid hotstamp with custom initials and these have to stand next to my TH&C set.

Fire away. And thanks from a “newbie (who has been playing home poker for 42 years!!!)
Paul

Re: Need a second set of chips

Hello and welcome to the site. Very nice set of chips you have, but, as you seem to already know, you can never have enough!!

In terms of hot stamped solids, you are looking the right places. ASM and Blue Chip are about your only options for true compression molded clay and Holdem Poker Chips is an absolutely fantastic site to buy from, as well as an outstanding CT site sponsor and all around great guy. I have 1900 T-Mold blanks I purchased through Holdem Poker Chips and they are awesome chips - great colors and a classic mold.

One other option I would point out to you would be the "Desert Palms" line of Blue Chips offered from "The Chip Room" who is another site sponsor. "Desert Palms" are available in two versions - a compression molded clay manufactured by Blue Chip and a cheaper injection molded version manufactured somewhere else. I have 2000 or so of the compression molded variety and they are my overall favorite chips. The quarter and $0.50 Blue Chip Desert Palms are hot-stamped solids, but the remainder of the line are inlayed with edge-spots so it will depend on how much you are set on hot stamps as to whether these will interest you or not. Here is a link to the Chip Room: The Chip Room - Texas Hold'em and other poker supplies just look to the left-hand menu and select "Desert Palms Casino Chips" to see the ones I am referring to.

Again, good luck and welcome to the site.

Re: Need a second set of chips

Paul,

You have ordered samples from the 3 main sources that anyone here would recommend. BCC, ASM and HPC all can fit your bill, but they won't be the same as those H&C Paulsons. The BCC and HPC chips will be closer to the H&C's than the ASMs.

I am sure that you will get some "advice" on BCC chips from Nexttime if he finds your thread. He and a few others have had some quality control issues. This isn't to say that all orders turn out bad, they don't, but the people who have had a bad experience have been pretty vocal.

ASM and HPC can sell you blanks and can stamp them for you too if you just want initials or values. T-molds (which are made by BCC) are probably the most popular here and they are available in a load of colors. Two chiptalk members I can think of who can stamp them include SuckoutKing and jsmithjr if you want something beyond basic hotstamps.

Just Dan's 2 cents. You should get a load more from the veterans.

Re: Need a second set of chips

welcome aboard!

Keep an eye out for the starbursts that pop up on eBay regularly. Those will offer various colors and won't have your initials on the chips.

Another great place is to check out the members classifieds. There you can buy a ton of great chips.

Depending on your set size you can find some great chips. It may just take some time to get there.

Nice score on the Paul-Son chips 7 years ago. I tried about 2 months after they sold the company and changed policy.

Re: Need a second set of chips

Welcome, and congrats on the great set you already have. HPC offers a very nice T-mold tournament hot stamped chip that might fit the bill. LINKY if you haven't already seen them.

Re: Need a second set of chips

I agree that Tmolds , BCC Flame Mold, and ASM Hourglass are probably your best bets (in that order) unless you managed to pickup the Paulson Web Mold blanks a while back from HPC (no longer available).
